Music Soothes the Savage Mommy Beast
By Becky Freeman
Rest, letting go of expectations, having some fun days off, taking care of your health- are you feeling better yet, Mom? Now here's the icing on the cake. Start filling your mornings and life with music you love, music that inspires you and lifts your spirit. It's a heaven-sent gift to perk up your mothering mood. Everyone has their special tastes but if I had a tired mom on my front porch and wanted to send her off with some music to set her toes tapping, and get her heart ready to waltz with her little ones again- here's the 3 CD's I'd tuck in her diaper bag as she left my kitchen.
Art Garfunkel (of “Simon &”Garfunkel fame) has a wonderful CD called Songs From A Parent To A Child. In fact, I just found out that it won a Grammy for the best Musical Album for Kids in 1998. It’s a CD that both parents & kids will both enjoy waking up to in the morning -- upbeat, soothing, tons of fun. From the lovely “Morning Has Broken”to the toe tapping you're a Wonderful One”to the reverent“Lord's Prayer”this CD is one of my all-time favorites, and I'm all out of preschoolers in my house!
(It's a real treat to hear Art's son (a little miniature fuzzy haired version of his dad) belt out a tune with his daddy, and deliver a giggle at the end of Good Luck Charm” that will charm any mom or child into a grin. Kids may love Barnie, but that purple dinosaur voice can drive YOU up the wall. It's nice to find an album that moms and kids can love and enjoy together.)
Laurie and Sharon, sisters and real moms of preschoolers themselves, have formed a dynamite singing duo called 2Moms. They are Texas gals, and just as real and sweet as two sisters can be! Their CD, Love You, Mommy, will nourish your mothering heart.
I was privileged to minister with Cheri Keaggy this year, who, a loving mother herself, writes and sings songs that sooth and lift my heart toward heaven. Her voice is so pleasant to listen to, almost childlike and full of wonder. (She wrote the song, Little Boy on His Knees,”that touched the heart of every mom who heard it!
