Do I Need a Work at Home Business Plan?
By Denise Willms
When you decide to work at home, you may be attracted by the freedom of running your own business, setting your own hours, moving however the music moves you. You have a lot of freedom and flexibility when you choose to work at home, but you will need some structure in place so your business will grow and prosper.
Your Work at Home Business Plan
The first thing you will need is a business plan. If you don't plan on borrowing money for your business, this doesn't have to be very complicated. And if you don't have any staff to manage or hire, it is even simpler. But that doesn't mean a business plan isn't important. In a way, it may be just as important as if you were writing it for a larger business, or to ask for money. This is the document that will keep you focused on your goals, when there is no one else to remind you what they are.
Writing Your Business Plan
Your business plan may only need to be one page long or so. You can start with one page, and add to it as needed. It doesn't need to be typed on fancy paper or even in a special format. It just needs to describe the purpose of your business, what your goals are, and how you're going to reach those goals.
What to Include in Your Business Plan
A plan for your work at home business should include:
- What your business does
- Who you do it for
- How you do it
- How you are different from everyone else who offers this product or service
- How you are going to market your business
Once you have your plan written down, don't just put it aside and forget about it. Refer to it regularly as your business grows. In the beginning, you may need to make a lot of changes to it as you learn more about your business and what your customers need. As your business develops, add to your plan and set new goals for yourself.
With your plan solidly in place, you can enjoy the freedom of the work at home lifestyle, and know that you're on track to reach your business goals.
