The Man Called Cash, by Steve Turner

Reviewed by Amy B

Growing up, I frequently heard of Johnny Cash by name as a legend, but I didn't know about the man. That would explain why I was surprised to find out he was a Christian for most of his life. When I received this book to review, I wasn't very confident about being interested in it enough to make it through. However, Mr. Turner was able to make the musical and spiritual side of Johnny come to life in this authorized biography.

Having watched the video of Cash's most recent single, "Hurt," I found the first chapter of this book rather touching. A glimpse into the final days John and June Cash shared and then the melancholy time after June's death. From there, Mr. Turner delves into the story of Johnny's parents and then into his tragic and poverty filled childhood. He became saved at the age of twelve.

After serving his country, in the military, he settled down and married his first wife, Vivian. But the strain and atmosphere of being on the road, along with Johnny's substance abuse, was detrimental to the health of their marriage. They divorced after 14 years and four girls. Shortly after that Johnny married June Carter, whom he had already performed with for a number of years. The majority of the second half of the book covers the time in which they were married, the addition of their son, the ups and downs of his musical career and his spiritual life.

There are a couple sections full of pictures and some of Johnny's writings. The bonus at the end of the book is Mr. Turner's interview with Johnny Cash, a chronological history, and a discography.

He always had a heart for those serving time in prison and performed for them in some of the well known prisons in this country. Maybe it was because he was always battling the sinful side of his nature, and often losing, felt a connection with others who had lost to that side as well. Everytime he fell, he eventually picked himself back up. He seemed to try to emulate that grace, as well as he could, to others, as he received an abundance of grace from God.

Note from Rach:

It has been months since I read "The Man Called Cash" and passed it on to my sister. The mention of this book brings up sentimental feelings.

I always liked the video Cash made for "Hurt." After reading The Man Called CASH it plain makes me sob. Early on the book reveals that just before filming the Hurt video June found out about a menacing heart problem [leaky valve, I believe]. So the expression on her face... she knew her time with him was short. That and more emotion packed imagery that made it appear to be Johnny's farewell too-- WOW.
