The Beacon Street Girls by Annie Bryant

Reviewed by Amy B

I recently had the pleasure of reading Beacon Street Girls, Worst Enemies/Best Friends, by Annie Bryant. It is the story of four girls, Charlotte, Maeve, Avery and Katani, who, in the beginning of the book, seem unlikely to be friends. This is the first book from a continuing series.

Charlotte is an accident-prone girl who seems to have a hard time making new friends, mainly because of frequent family moves. Maeve is a girl who looks like she has it all, but suffers from a learning disability. Avery is a short and spunky, sports-minded girl. Katani isn't very good at sports, although she has two older sisters who are and another sister with a form of autism. Initially, the girls get assigned seats together in the lunchroom and in an attempt to get out of it, they end up on the road to becoming best friends. There are morality lessons to the story, such as not judging a book by its cover and what a tangled web we weave, when we first practice to deceive. Of course, the friends look out for each other throughout the story and in the end, all is forgiven.

I actually enjoyed reading the book, even though it is written for girls in their tweens. Maybe that just means I'm still young at heart? It was very easy to read and had a wholesome, family-friendly story line. I plan to pass the book on to my daughter to read. You can find out more information at http://www.beaconstreetgirls.com.

Update March 3 2006: Amy B's daughter continues to enjoy this series, and passes the books along to her friends. She has the whole collection now, and even used some of her own allowance to buy a couple from the book mobile!
