Taking The Bully By The Horns by Kathy Noll

"Taking The Bully By The Horns," written by Kathy Noll, with Dr. Jay Carter, is the childrens' version of the book, "Nasty People". To me, bullying is an ugly word. I don't like what it means and I pray my daughter will never have to endure it and that she will never feel pressured to participate in it. We have often discussed bullies and how different situations can be handled. This book provides information about the bully, the victim and the solution. It is also an easy read for any tween through mid-teens. Younger school-age children would benefit from it, too, but may need to read it with a parent to get the most out of it.
Ms. Noll starts off with several examples of her personal experience with bullies. She states that everyone experiences some degree of bullying at some point during their lives. After reflecting on the matter, she does have a valid point. There are different types of bullies and games they play. While some bullies are rather sneaky, others are quite the opposite. Some bully with words, while others bully with actions, or a combination of the two. One of the games discussed in the book is called the "guessing game." I can see this happening within my daughter's age group. In this situation, the bully befriends the victim, saying and doing nice things. Then, out of the blue the bully starts saying and doing hurtful things. When confronted, the bully acts like the victim is the one with the problem, denies doing anything wrong, and continues with the friendly, unfriendly cycle. The book is rounded out by discussing the different types of victims and what can be done to try to stop the bullying. Another important aspect of the book is the discussion of how a victim may feel or act when bullied.
The key is to recognize the bully and then confront the bully. If not, both the bully and the victim will continue to suffer, and the situation may escalate into something worse. Many examples are provided throughout the book to further explain bullying and what to do about it. After reading the book, your child will be more aware and will hopefully be better equipped to deal with the bullies he or she encounters.
