Self Incrimination, by Randy Singer

Reviewed by Amy B

Not too long ago, I was sent my first Christian fiction to review, Self Incrimination, by Randy Singer. The novel is centered around a defense attorney, Leslie Conners, who is trying her first criminal case. All the other characters in this novel are also meticulously portrayed throughout the story, so the reader gets a solid understanding of who they are. While many different issues are dealt with, along with the main story line, they are all carefully woven together throughout the book and I never felt lost or had to reread any section, except for maybe the times one of my kids or something else distracted me.

Of course, the main story line encompasses the case Leslie is working on, trying to prove her client's innocence or at the least, prove the murder was committed in self-defense. There are twists and turns in the case, some expected and some not. Unfortunately, Leslie's client has confessed to the murder, is not very cooperative and has proven she is not always truthful. As she follows the leads and tries to determine the best way to handle Tara's defense, she is faced with moral decisions and some suspenseful encounters. In addition to all of this, she has to deal with her upcoming wedding, newly discovered health issues and her spirituality.

If it weren't for my other duties, I probably would have read the book from cover to cover in a much shorter time. It was refreshing to read a work of fiction that manages to include what Jesus did at the cross right there among all the other story lines. In fact, I would venture to guess even someone who isn't a Christian would enjoy reading Self Incrimination. Although the news of the Gospel is there, it isn't overwhelming and I don't think anyone would feel they were being preached at while reading it, unless maybe they were ultrasensitive about it.
