Poetry Speaks to Children (Book & CD)
Reviewed by Rachel Lower
Poetry Speaks to Children is a diverse collection of poems, including many classic childhood rhymes and beloved authors. Included with the book is an audio CD. Many of the modern poems are read by their actual authors.
A sample of the classics in this collection: "Casey at the Bat," "Wynken, Blynken, and Nod," "The Lion and the Lily," "Frodo's Song," "Jabberywocky," and the endearing "Sneeze!" The editors have included a variety of lesser known and modern poems as well. They've also included poetry from the treasure chests of other cultures.
Many of the authors are dear to the hearts of Americans, even for many generations, such as: Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, J. R. R. Tolkien, Margaret Wise Brown of "Goodnight Moon" fame, and Ogden Nash.
Poetry Speaks to Children is beautifully illustrated, featuring the work of three artists, all skilfully capturing the spirit of each poem in their illustrations. This is a worthy keepsake addition to any child's treasury of books. Sharing and reading this collection alongside your child will make it especially precious.
Poetry Speaks will surely be an instant family favourite, spurring a life-long love of the art of the written word.
