Pocahontas: Princess of Faith and Courage, written by Maja Ledgerwood and illustrated by Tyson Ledgerwood
Reviewed by Rachel Lower
Finally, a children's book that portrays Pocahontas as a christian heroine. Often the faith of historical figures is over looked or only briefly alluded to in biographical works. The couple behind this book made Pocahontas's conversion and faith a highlight of her life story.
The story itself had a good pace and is most suitable for elementary aged children. The watercolour illustrations are vivid and great thought for detail was put into the symbols and colours used. The Illustrator took inspiration, at first from Native American culture, and then from Christian symbolism. A guide in the back explains these references. A quiz and discussion prompts are also presented.
So much thought and effort was put into this book. Check it out!
