Overweight Kids: Spiritual, Behavioral, and Preventative Solutions by Dr. Linda Mintle

I must confess...at first glance of the title, I wasn't terribly excited about reading this book for a review. Neither of my kids seem to have weight or diet issues. However, I discovered that in addition to advice on how to determine whether your child is obese, and then how to help, preventative measures are also discussed.
There are so many kids who are overweight nowadays. Personally, I feel the two biggest contributors to this youthful epidemic are parents opting for convenience foods or eating out on the busy workdays of the week, and the entertainment today's technology provides, which can lead to a sedentary lifestyle. But, that is only my opinion. I'm certainly not an expert, unlike Dr. Mintle, who feels the top 10 reasons children are overweight are too many calorie-empty foods, too little movement, genetics, emotional eating, lifestyle and community changes, family patterns, the school scene, advertisements and media, a quick-fix mentality and poor spiritual equipping.
All ten topics are discussed throughout the book. There are Scripture references, quizzes and solid advice for making healthy lifestyle changes for your family. As a parent, I want my kids to be as healthy as they possibly can. Kids who are overweight have a greater risk of developing asthma, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, orthopaedic complications, sleep apnea, hyperlipidaemia and constipation. If you have a child who is or may be overweight you will find a lot of helpful information and advice in Overweight Kids. Informative and encouraging, this book would be a help to parents who are concerned about their child's weight.
