Recently, I was given the opportunity to review two of four books in a new series called "Flipswitch, " which is geared towards teens. "Heat" covers the sexual pressures our adolescents face today while "Buzz" addresses drug and alcohol abuse. The other two, which I have not had the opportunity to review are "Blur" and "Split." These last two in the series discuss self image and coping with divorce.
My teen years are way, way back in the distant past, and since I don't currently have teenagers, I'm a bit in the dark about them nowadays. I'm guessing they're quite different from 20-25 years ago. So with my archaic knowledge, I'll do my best to give my thoughts about this series..
When I first started reading "Buzz" I just didn't get it. Not the first part anyway. But I'm not a teen. In what I've observed in present day teens, I think this would possibly be a good resource in reaching an unsaved or newly saved teen struggling with "leftovers" from the old self. I just don't see it being for every teen and I don't see my daughter relating to it much. I hope I'm not in for a rude awakening in a couple years. I did relate to "Heat" a little better and it lays out the consequences of premarital sex quite well. This one would probably be good for any teen, Christian or not.
Both of these books will give teens something to think about and I imagine the other two would be the same. One side of the book pulls them in with information and stories or comments from other teens, and midway through you flip it over and get set straight.
This series is definitely for teens, and not for the younger ages, unless you know of a preteen who is ahead of his years.
