Courage The Monkey by Mark Jordan
Reviewed by Amy B
This story is about a spider monkey named Jonathan, who lives near the top of Mount Kenomy. As monkeys in his village reach the age of eleven, they mark the occasion by climbing their first tree. A very tall tree! Jonathan looks forward to that moment, but when faced with the challenge he becomes scared and cannot make himself do it. While others poke fun, Jonathan's brother David tells him that he believes in him and knows that one day he will be able to do it and do it well. David plays a key role in helping Jonathan eventually find his courage.
Geared toward toddlers to mid-elementary aged children, the tale and colorful illustrations of "Courage the Monkey" are sure to be a great tool to teach and entertain. "Courage The Monkey" is the first in a series that also includes topics such as: lying, hanging with the wrong crowd, humility, perseverance, and putting others' interests first.
An interesting fact that wouldn't be known to the casual reader is the number on Jonathan's shirt, 625, is a reference to Matthew 6:25. I will happily add this book to my son's library collection.
