Pride and Humbleness

By Rachel Lower

For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 2 Timothy 3:2

Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find? Proverbs 20:6

Basics

Haven't we all bragged at some point? "I won this and this and that!" Haven't we all at least once, in order to lift ourselves up, belittled someone else? At some point, every one of us have been proud. We have spoken proudly, given a proud look, and plainly bragged away at the mouth. The basic definition of pride is, "A sense of personal dignity; a feeling of pleasure because of something achieved, done, or owned". We can feel pleased about something we have achieved, but it is when we exalt ourselves about others and brag to others that we become proud in the biblical sense.

These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren. Proverbs 6:16-19

The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate. Proverbs 8:13

Pride is evil, and the Lord hates it!

Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished. Proverbs 16:5

Pride/Hebrew: 02087 zadown {zaw-done'}

AV - pride 6, presumptuously 2, proud 3; 11
1) pride, insolence, presumptuousness, arrogance

But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. James 4:6

Signs of Pride

He is in the way of life that keepeth instruction: but he that refuseth reproof erreth. Proverbs 10:17

A fool despiseth his father's instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent. Proverbs 15:5

Refuses to be corrected. Everyone knows someone who cannot admit when he is wrong. This is, in fact, pride.

For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. Romans 12:3

Thinks 'extra' highly of himself. We often label one with this attitude as a 'snob'. Anyone who thinks they are better than someone else is being proud. A well known example is a rich man thinking he is better than all the other people in town, because of his money. This can also happen when we let our achievements 'go to our head'.

Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed. The bows of the mighty men are broken, and they that stumbled are girded with strength. They that were full have hired out themselves for bread; and they that were hungry ceased: so that the barren hath born seven; and she that hath many children is waxed feeble. 1 Samuel 2:3-5

In the mouth of the foolish is a rod of pride: but the lips of the wise shall preserve them. Proverbs 14:3

Arrogancy and foolishness.

Results of Pride He loveth transgression that loveth strife: and he that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction. Proverbs 17:19

Proverbs 11:2 When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.

Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom. Proverbs 13:10

A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit. Proverbs 29:23

The proud will be humbled, some way. Pride brings about contention, shame, and destruction. One example of the results of pride is a HS basketball star letting her gift go to her head. She will be humbled, perhaps by seeing what people think of her big head and being embarrassed. Perhaps one game she won't do anything right! He who is proud will be humbled, he who is humbled will be lifted up.

Solution to Pride

Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Philippians 2:3

We should let our compliments come from others, and not praise ourselves. We should in turn praise and encourage others. Complimenting another will humble you in the process.

Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips. Proverbs 27:2

Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:5-11

Christ's Humility

Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth. And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know. But if any man love God, the same is known of him. 1 Corinthians 8:1-3

Love and truth lead to humility. The truth is we are all equally loved by God.

Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. Matthew 11:11

Humility is out of love, knowing this and serving each other.

And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great. Luke 9:48

Be Humble

Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. 1 Peter 5:5

Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 18:4

Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. James 4:10

Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: 1 Peter 5:6

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. Matthew 5:3-12
