that head lice was found in dd's class. They state to check head for 14 days and all that jazz to make sure she doesn't get it. I looked in the stores and seen the products to treat it if she gets it-but I want to know how to prevent it. We went through the whole thing of not sharing coats, hats, scarves, etc-but is there a product out there that will prevent it or home remedies to prevent?
Thank you

not aware of any preventative measures other than what you already know/mentioned
I suppose you could get the spray and treat your bedding and such, just in case.

Wash bedding/blankets/coats/jackets/clothes/hats/carseat cover/pony tail holders really well and DRY them...the heat helps kill for sure!
You can go ahead and put the mayo mix in the hair that would help kill off anything if was there early! Dunk combs/brushes in alcohol and then freeze for 48 hours Go ahead and vaccum furniture and carpet in house and in the car if ya want....have her change in the garage for a few days from her school clothes and brush her hair out well in the garage too.... Spray or wash book bag and use a paper lunch sack to keep that clean and leave backpack itself in garage for awhile........just bring in the books/papers. Good luck!

I've read but havent tried tea tree oil for lice..Its said that they dont like the smell of it (it has a semi strong scent) so I think that could be used as a prevention treatment..I use the stuff on my dd's cradle cap (putting 10 drops of oil in a shampoo).. you can look up the exact amount of oil ur supposed to put in the shampoo for the lice on yahoo... i cant remember off the top of my head..

Tea tree oil does work
mayo mix...not sure of it as a mix but I helped a friend through a lice investation....and all you do is apply mayo to your hair and cover with a shower cap or towel...and let sit...then rinse and shampoo. just make sure you wash everything in hot water and clean all brushes and vaccum. Praying that you don't have any problems at home. when I was working as a hairdresser I had a few kids come in with it and of course you can't cut it but I would itch for hours......I also NEVER got lice as a child and the one time I did get it was while working as a hairdresser....my head had been itching but didn't think anything of it but let one of the girls check it to make sure and she found maybe 1 or 2 nits....went and treated it right then and no more problems. |

OH man, we went through this a little over a year ago (the notice went home on theh last day of school just days before Christmas. Lovely.) I scratched my head for weeks after getting that notice, lol. And asked the same question you did - why isn't there a preventative for making the lice NOT want to get on your kid?!
I did as others suggested - washed all the bedding and coats, and checked my kids' heads for a couple weeks after.....actually it ended up being almost a month because shortly after returning to school from Christmas break, another lice notice was sent home. Fortunately that was the last one. I grilled my son about who was there and who was absent - was anyone missing from his table, lol. Just so you know, lice don't jump from one host to another......it's got to be through a shared garment, comb, bedding, touching heads, etc. |

Some of the pharmacies over here sell preventative hairsprays containing tea tree oil (so the tea tree oil should do the trick to discourage the little critters). If you add your own oil to shampoo - just be aware that it is very potent stuff - don't use too much (one website I saw recommended 12 drops to 8 oz shampoo). I have read recent reports that say that repeated use of tea tree oil on children may have a hormonal effect (see I told you it was potent) so I would only use it for a short period until the immediate danger has passed. That said, I would definately be trying tea tree oil on my kids during a high risk period like you mention. I hope that you manage to beat the head lice.

We can get preventative sprays here too, that usually have either one of or a mix of tea tree oil, lavender oil, and sandalwood oil. Apparently not washing your child's hair will discourage nits too - they like clean hair, from what I've heard, lol. Praying your family won't be affected by the outbreak!

I had to laugh - I just got back from picking our boys up from school, and guess what? They both have "nit notes" advising the teacher suspects someone in the class has nits. I've checked them, and they both seem clear, thank goodness!
