Default Make them feel special!

Before I was married, I worked for the School Board. My boss's wife moved out and took the 8 yr old but left the 5 yr old. I never understood. He asked me to move in for a while and help out until he could get things sorted out. It turns out his girlfriend left her husband shortly after and moved in. I stayed until the end of my semester at college. She tried really hard to make the little boy feel special and show him that she cared for him.

Anyway, one thing she did was draw smiley faces and such on his lunch bag and put stickers on some of his food items. One morning when I got up she had put a smiley face on a lunch bag and packed me a lunch for college. I will never forget the feeling I had that day.

What do you do to make your child feel special?

I like to cut her sandwiches with cookie cutters into hearts, stars and flowers. I also buy the plain lunch bags and decorate them sometimes. When she can read I think I'll drop in little cards to make her smile!

When we use paper plates for lunch, I draw a different smiley face or a few words that will be hidden by their sandwich I let the littles help with lunch. Either making sandwiches with me or having them set the table. Or one gets to choose what we eat that day. (from my choices )

Good thread! I'm always looking for new ideas

Girls I love this thread--I put Hershey's kisses in their lunch box and kiss the kisses before I put them in there. Stephanie

Right now I put little pictures or stickers on my DS's snack bag...but when he gets older..and can rea...I will write notes on a napkin...my mom always did this for me everyday for school and I always looked forward to reading her little notes or funny things she would say...my friends enjoyed reading them too....of course it wasn't quite as cool when I was in high school ...that is when I started buying lunch at school...lol

OH yeah, I've seen that. We have a special spoon here. LOL We got one of those light saber spoons out of a box of cereal. It lights up through the clear plastic spoon. Way cool for Star Wars fantatics ya know But, we only have one. So, my rule is, you cannot ASK for the spoon...but mom decides who gets the special spoon and when. I need to get some more of those special kind of things like that. They've moved beyond the Veggie Tales, Blues Clues and Elmo plates LOL My 9 and 7 yr olds give me a scowling kind of 'oh mom, WHAT did you do?' kind of look if they get anything but VT I think we're due to upgrade to The Incredibles or something hehe

Default Take my son out - just me and him

I make sure to take my son out - just the two of us - every week. Even if it is just for an hour running some errands, or out to a movie or for a bite to eat...he loves the one to one attention. He feels a bit insecure having a 2 year old sister who he thinks is "cuter" than him so this is really important.

I tell him everyday that God made him to be a really special and exceptional little boy. I speak life and God's truth over him in prayer and tell him why he is so special.

My little guy has shaky self-esteem and is incredibly sensitive emotionally and otherwise (this can be common with kids that are both gifted and learning disabled) so I have to make an extra effort to make sure he feels good about who he is and the way God made him.

These are such fun ideas! I look forward to doing things like this when my ds is in school. I think it will be fun to go eat lunch with him too.
