School year is almost over..

There is only 7 more weeks of school left for this school year--my how time flies! What I was wondering is how much, if any, previewing for the upcoming year or reviewing from the previous year do you do with your child during the summer? We do the reading club at the library and read lots of books but I was just wondering about you guys. Stephanie

My girls are 7 and 10. I just try to encourage them to play outside, do creative artwork, and like you mentioned, hang out at the library. I don't do any formal reviews. I try to capture teachable moments like when my daughter is given birthday money. We do "math" as she figures how much to tithe, spend, and save. We take road trips to local museums and parks for "history". I just think they have so much busy seatwork and homework during the rest of the year, I want them to just be kids during their summer.

Last year I encouraged use of Summer Bridge Activities. It is just a workbook, but it concisely reviews the previous grade while building for the next grade.

Davidsmommy are those the books you can buy at Wal-Mart? I remember as a child that my mom would by those during the summer and I loved doing those. I may buy those for my kids. Thanks, Stephanie

Hmm, I'm not sure if they're at Wal-Mart. I know Amazon has all of them. I actually bought mine through a school supply store.

Aaron & I have reading challenges over the summer. I try to encourage him to read during the evening and especially on rainy days when he can't get outside to play. We start a book, maybe the same one, at the same time and see who can finish it first. It's great fun and I put aside time to discuss it with him. It gives us our own little time together w/out the baby too.
