I took my DS to the Dr. yesterday for what I thought were really really nasty fire ant bites. The Dr. says they are spider bites! I've never seen a spider bite so that didn't even cross my mind, although DH did tell me he thought they were spider bites (He has 1 on his arm and 2 on his foot). The were red and swollen to bigger than a quarter, the one on his toe had a nasty blister that today is bigger than the size of 2 pencil erasers. Poor little guy can't wear shoes until the blister heals itself. If the bite on his arm swells bigger than the circle she drew on his arm he will have to be seen again. He is on an antibiotic because the Dr. thinks he as celluitis. I'm so glad my Mommy instinct told me to take him in...I just wish I would have taken him frist thing yesterday morning.
Anyone else have experience with spider bites on their little ones? We have no clue what kind of spider it was. DS didn't say anything when he got bit. |

Aww poor thing! No the only bites Timmy's gotten are little, probably mesquito. Most likely he got them when he was sleeping or maybe when he was outside. You might want to do a bug bomb or something if you think they're in the house, I'd hate for him to get anymore.

My son got bit in the eye once when he was a toddler. We were walking into Mejiers and he started crying! Here it was the time of year where the baby spiders fly in the air on their little webs. His whole eye swelled shut! He had to take prednisone liquid, which tasted terrible! It looked awful but after initial bite he never complained of it. I have a picture. It is nasty!
It is rare to be bitten by a spider that causes such a reaction. Little ones are more vulnerable though. It is good that you took him in. Cellulitis can be serious. Give him all his meds even if he starts looking and feeling better. A couple of weeks ago my son woke up with a swollen area on his high cheekbone. I asked if it was acne and it wasn't. I looked closely at it and could see a bite. I figured it was a spider. We cleaned his room really well that day and I found a black furry one with the white dots, the ones that jump, on the light that is right beside his bed. We killed it. His bite did get swollen and red in appearance. I kept a close eye on it for signs of cellulitis and gave him vitamin C at every meal and bed time. It healed on its own without a doctor's intervention. Yea! You know they say that you are never more than 10 minches afrom a spider at all times! |

It's so weird that I saw this on the board today. My husband had a brown recluse spider bite him on the leg several years ago and because he had bad doctors that didn't take it seriously, he had to have several surgical cleanings and two skin grafts on it. Now, probably because of the area getting scratched or something, he has cellulitis. And again, because of doctors focusing on their vacation time and not on his leg it got really bad and he is in the hospital on IV antibiotics and had a surgical consult. Thankfully he won't have to have any surgery at this time but it is really ugly looking.
I'm sorry about the picture. It was about 2am when I did this post originally and obviously |

Brown recluse are very dangerous as far as your skin and tissue go. They are "recluse" though, hence the name.

I don't think I have ever seen a brown recluse, but I know they are here. As a practice, I shake out any clothing I have not worn in a long time. I also shake out shoes and don't reach into dark corners. I'm not trying to be an alarmist; it's just a good idea to take precautions. I read one horror story of a woman getting bitten by a brown recluse that came in with her Christmas tree; she was bitten while decorating it.
