Default Avoiding caffeine during pregnancy?

I am, and found this interesting chart online that shows the caffiene content of many popular items. I was particularly surprised to learn that even Decaffeinated coffee still has 5mg of Caffeine No fair...

Anyway, here's the link:

I know, it stinks huh? And the way most companies decaf their coffee is gross too, so even if it didn't have caffeine, it would be yucky to drink.

I think I get most of my caffeine from chocolate...but I don't have TOO much, I think! LOL

dh sent me here http://caffeineweb.com/?p=15 an interesting commentary on caffeine.

i missed my caffeine while i was pregnant, but every once in a while i would have a small cup of decaf or half caf. don't beat yourself up if you want a cup every once in a while...

I usually avoid coffee altogether during pg, but my doctor said one 8oz cup of any caffinated beverage (coffee, tea, hot cocoa, soda) is ok every now and again. I could really go for some hot cocoa right now, but we don't have any in the house, so I will just have juice instead.

When I was pregnant with my 1st, I didn't avoid caffeine at all. As a matter of fact, Mt. Dew was my beverage of choice! Yuk!! I can't stand the stuff now. Anyway, I was 16 and stupid. I did end up with a UTI which quickly made me turn away from Mt. Dew altogether.

With my other pregnancies, including this one, I haven't avoided caffeine altogether. I do not drink caffeine on a regular basis though. But, if the mood strikes every once in a while, I may go buy a can (just one) of Diet Pepsi. I do that about once or twice a month. Also, my dh drinks a lot of coffee and I will have a cup sometimes but maybe a couple times a month.

My doctor told me the same thing that someone else said. The process they go through in order to make stuff decaffeinated is disgusting and worse for you that the caffeine itself.

So, I do have some caffeine in moderation.

There are some companies that use the Swiss water process to decaffenate the coffee.

Here is link that shows use which brands use the process:
