Default baby foods

Yesterday our pediatrician gave us the go ahead with veggies. I was curious about who makes their own baby food and what are some of your favorite and not so favorite attempts. I spoke with a dietician last week and was questioning her about what, if any, veggies are not recommended for babies and she said none really as long as he tolerates them well. I think I am going to try avocado tonight. She said she thought that would be a great one to try so I will let you all know how it goes. Any thoughts???

I agree, avocados are awesome first foods. I didn't give them to the twins because they are SUPER expensive here in the South, but it is always my first choice when it's available.
I don't think there really are bad veggies, asparagus might be hard because of the spikes, and I would peel the skin on stuff like apples. I would shy away from too much acidic foods in the beginning. My babies have always been super sensitive with acid and you don't want to give a stomach not use to harsh stuff that first.

I say feed your kid what your family usually eats, that way they are use to the foods you will be giving them later on. Our kids love Mediterranean, Thai, Chinese, Mexican, and Vietnamese food because we always gave it to them young.

Blessings,
Amber

Hey Amber, I know they are outrageous! ( I live in Greenville SC) but if you have an Aldi nearby they have awesome produce prices. Plus we also have a fantastic farmers market close by. Just thought I'd pass on the Aldi tip have a great day!

So we tried a baby led solids approach with Charlie. It has been a lot of fun! Basically, we just gave him whatever we had. If he could put it in his mouth on his own, he could eat it. He took to it really well too. His first food was actually a strawberry that he grabbed from my hand! LOL! That was just before 6 months. It felt good on his gums I'm sure. But I agree, avocado is a great first food. You can try just handing it to him and see how he does. It's so soft he can gum it without a problem. But babies have the ability to move food around in their mouth and not choke. The few times Charlie has had too much or couldn't swallow it, he manages to gag it up and then puke! LOL! Gross but cool to see his body doing what it's supposed to, ya know? I wasn't sure about the approach at first, but the more we did it, the more we liked it and so did he. If you're interested, you can check this site out:

All that being said, with Grace, I did take the make my own food approach. We did avocado, squash, sweet potatoes, peas. Everything! She liked it OK but almost everything backed her little tummy up. So much so, that I had to keep backing off of solids for her. Then we'd do a few more then back off. Finally she was around 11 months and just started taking our food and eating it! LOL! That's when it was easiest! Hee hee!

Have fun reading up and feeding your baby however you do it! Lots of fun!!!

Avacado is a GREAT first food Ashlyn had baby food maybe twice? I did all my own baby foods If you have ice trays, it works great to make a batch of whatever you want, freeze it in ice cube trays, put it in a ziplock, and pull one out at a time. I think one block is about an ounce I used this website as far as what order I introduced solids. Making your own baby food is *so* easy and tons cheaper!

I did the Baby Led Weaning approach with Sawyer as well... absolutely no time spent cooking and pureeing food separately for him. I'd give him a whole stem of broccoli to gnaw on or banana. http://www.babyledweaning.com/

Avocado is a great food though too... I used that a lot... it's kinda a super food and for some reason they love it!
