emergency versus scheduled

For those that have had 2 c-sections...Whats the difference between the emergency and the scheduled...

Is it more relaxed?
Does it take longer?
Is it in the same spot?
Did you get sick? (I got deathly ill moments after my first and had to be suctioned )

I'm just trying to get an idea...Hubby's talkin about it

With mine, I bascially turned up to my clinic appointment, was diagnosed with pre-eclampsyia and told I was not going home. Before I knew it I was having a c-section.

This time I have had more time knowing I am having a caesarian, so I guess I won't know until I get there how different it is. Let you know

And yes I did get sick with a huge infection, I just think i was so sick my body coudln't deal with it. So we are praying that since I am already in good health that this time around all will run smoothly.

I was so sick I couldn't stay awake for more than half an hour and the nurses had to repeatedly changed my sheets since I was soaked with sweat.... just yuk!

Well, at least they found out about my placenta problem now and not later and are able to plan for me and more of a chance for me to plan mentally and pray for no complications this time around

I would say the difference is that with an emergency c-section their is more risk involved because it's unexpected. It all has to be done in a hurry and it's something the dr hasn't planned for.. Emergency c-sections are typically done when the baby needs to come out right then in there due to risks that can occur. For example my first born pooped inside and she was at risk because if she smelled it could have gotten inside her lungs and she could of died. Make sense?

Oh lis, forgot to tell you, yes as far as I have been told they cut in the same spot.

I had my 1st c-section because ds was sideways and wouldn't move at all. It wasn't planned because they didn't know he was sideways until I was in labor and at the hospital. So that one wasn't planned. My 2nd one was planned because by that time my regular dr. (when doing that fun yearly exam) asked if that's why I had a c-section - too narrow. 6lbs. would be the most that could fit through and my first ds was 9 lbs.! Chances of me having a baby less than 6 lbs. was zilch. Anyways, so 2nd one was scheduled and I was pretty much in a "been here; done that" kind of mode. I knew pretty much what would be happening even though I was at a different hospital/different dr. Second time was MUCH better than the first. I think mostly because you already have a good idea of what to expect.

Oh okay, well here I've been told that if you have an emergency c-section that its the best choice to have a scheduled one next time around..Thats why I'm wondering...I had no problem with my c-section other than like someone mentioned, its done in a hurry and my muscles were not lined up right so I still have pain if I over exhaust or with pms cramps..or if I get a bad cough...The doctor told me they could go back in but umm no..So I just live with it, its gotten better over the years and I hardly notice it..

Angela's heart stopped but I hoping second time around that whatever doctor I have will NOT make me go over that long 2 solid weeks..because I'm small framed and baby runs out of room!

We're thinking about it, after we catch up and find a place to live..We're thinkin about it

Lis - if you get a new Dr just be specific and direct about your prior medical history, even if you can ask him/her to have your files transferred. My prior birthing/pregnancy was very eventful and we have moved away from where I was delivered last time so I too have faced new doctors etc... I just made sure to write down the most eventful stuff on my notes.

I have a small frame too! DH said to me today he has a gut feeling I won't even make it to 4 weeks away when I am meant to go in for my section.

Janelle... you are lucky to feel been there done that, I almost feel knowing from 19 weeks that I have to have another section, that its more time to get worked up or grossed out about being "cut open" - but that's me, I have always had a "thing" about having operations (and so far the section has been my ONLY one).

I didn't care much for that scar! Yick...but it faded thank goodness I didn't realize how vain I was till I had that...Now I proudly show it to Angela any time she asks to see it.. Also one of staples got deep in the skin and had to be cut out....geeeeeeeesh

Maybe a new doctor wouldn't be such a bad idea

The scheduled was a cake walk in regards to delievering the baby. Much more relaxed, joked around with staff, felt much much better afterwards.

And yes, they used the same scar to cut on.

That's the way I was, some of the staff was quite surprised at how I was doing. I even had a student nurse that came in my room before and asked if it was ok for her to observe/watch and that was fine with me. I was shaking though when they did my epidural - even though I didn't think I was nervous, apparently my nerves knew something was up. I had a great nurse that had me lean on her and she helped hold me still.

You know when I Had my section with the twins I had 2 obstetricians, 2 midwives, an anethatist, a nurse by my head, 2 paediatricians so I am hoping NOT to have so many people in the room, not because I was embarassed at being nude from the waist down, it just felt more... almost like there was something to be worried about, but understand too, this is how it is done with twins.

But like you guys if a student wanted to watch, I would allow it.

I am beginning to wonder how they will do mine because at yet I am still unsure until I visit the specialist obstetrician as to whether my placenta has adhered to my prior scar or not, which was a question raised by my doctors.

I suppose I should just ask the midwife what will happen, but I think I was just hangingin in their until my final consult and ultrasound with the specialist before jumping to conclusions or asking directly... well the suspense is killing me, so I will ask.
