    Default What do you think

about teachers being on facebook during teaching hours? Not lunch, not recess... actual 'kids in the classroom' hours? I was just on facebook and saw Fiona's teacher online.... I'm not 'friends' with her on facebook, but she posted on someone's status that I am friends with. Just a brief comment, but still...

whoops.... not sure how I managed to post this in Toddlers and Preschoolers. Fiona is in Kindergarten - it's her teacher. If someone who can wants to move this post, feel free.

ETA: Either I'm crazy (which is entirely possible! haha!) or someone moved this post already. I swear it was in the Toddlers section a few minutes ago... lol

Totally not cool if the kids are in the classroom. It is one thing if they are on during their break, but not if the kids are in the classroom.

Not ok... My personal opinion (while probably wildly unpopular) is that unless you have a job where there is actually NOTHING to do besides sit there, you shouldn't be on facebook or email during work hours. You're getting paid to do a job...not keep up with your friends If your boss knows and is totally fine with it, then that's between you & your boss!! That's totally different imo

Brings to mind those photos of teens with their winter coat sleeves on their desk but one of their arms under the desk texting.. hopefully it wasn't like that and she was just taking a bathroom break anyway or something. School have a policy on cells and teachers?

My daughter (homeschooled but taking an Comp Lit class at our co-op) had a teacher who only taught a 2 hour class and she was constantly on Facebook!

To me it just reflects poorly, yk? This particular incident isn't worth making a stink about (particularly because not only is she Fiona's teacher, but she is our neighbour and her daughter is our babysitter!) but it just made me think. I'm sure it happens a lot more on the job than we are aware of. Not just with teachers either. However, when being on FB takes your attention away from students who are right in front of you, I think it is a little bit different than ignoring your paperwork (or whatever) to log on. (Not that I think it's appropriate while on the job in general, either.)

maybe she was on a sick day? Otherwise, she probably shouldn't have been since kids are discouraged to do that also. Lead by example.

Is it possible that although she was not at lunch the students were not in the room with her? Maybe her class was at art or gym? If the kids were in another room, she should have been using the computer for grading or lesson planning, not FB, but slightly less inappropriate. If the kids were in there with her when she was on FB that is just really bad then.
