Does anyone have ideas for evening devotional time with your kids? We often read a story out of Bible Friends, although they're a tiny bit above ds's understanding, he does get quite a bit out of them, especially with the pictures. Then we sing, ds loves to sing. And then we usually pray & let him say his own prayer. Just wanted to hear some other moms' ideas...

We read Veggie Tales Family Devotional and also just some stories from some Bible storybooks we bought at Walmart. We usually do ours during schooltime but it might be a good idea to do around the dinner table.

When we were young my dad would act out Bible stories with the salt and pepper, glasses, forks, etc. We kids loved it and it was a good visual aid. We've done it with our kids too and they always like it and get involved in what thing should be who. :D

We just pull out the kids Bible and read them a story then DH usually gives them a kind of application lesson - such as - he got the Magnadoodle board out and scribbled on it and said "This is sin, this is what it looks like - a BIG mess" then he erased it with the leaver and said "But Jesus can make us clean again just like that!"

Or he will pull out the checkers with the black and white pieces and turn them all over to white and say "this is us before we sin..." and then give an example of sins like "You say no to Mummy and Daddy - that is a sin" and he will turn a piece over to black. He will go through various behavioural issues until the pieces are a quarter black and then say "But we can say sorry to Jesus and ask him to take our sins away" and then turn the pieces back to white and say "Then we are clean"

That are the kinds of things we do - devotion and application.

We have this book (below), and I found it was PERFECT for my preschooler! The lessons include a little "life application" story, a simplified Bible passage and accompaning memory verse, and an activity or game of varying sorts. Each lesson is just the right length for a younger attention span, yet without compromising the importance of what's being taught in the verse. My little boy LOVED this book and always looked forward to reading it each night with us. :)

I LOVE the Miller books. " Prudence with the Millers". "Wisdom with the Millers". "Story Time with the Millers" and "Missionaries with the Millers". Lots of great of great instruction and good Bible verses. The Story Time one is for preschoolers. But I had toddlers even listen to the others as well. Also have used Keys for Kids devotional books.

We have been using My Good Night Bible... It tells the stories with Rhyme and then has comp. questions, a prayer, and a "vocab" word (that we learn in sign lang). The boys have used it since they were born and love it so much that, though we have bought other kids Bibles, we have ended up buying three of the Good Night Bibles because the covers keep getting torn off it is so well-used! The boys can now even quote many of the stories and the verses that go with them. When they start KG next year, we decided to do something a little more advanced, so thanks for this thread! I will use it when looking for a new devo this summer!

I read a childrens Bible to Timmy too. But if you want, you can start teaching him little Bible verses (like 6 words or less). Timmy has learned some at Awanas and he's only 3 1/2. It amazes me how much he can remember :D

We read a Bible story at night. My Dad got DS a children's Bible story book for Christmas so we've gotten into the routine of reading one each night. He looks forward to them now. Sometimes he'll turn to a page and tell us a story, it's so cute how he says Moses.

During the day we do lessons together and this year we've added memory verses. I have a tape of verses that are songs and he really enjoys those.
