I got my labwork back today and my levels look good. My OB prescribed Prometrium though, just to help. There was a warning not to take when pg and I of course looked it up online and found all kinds of things. Does anyone have any advice or anything they could share to help me with this. I am not sure if I want to take it. Thanks!

Do you have a history of miscarriage? I don't understand " just to help?" Is it an oral medication or a vaginal or rectal med? I haven't researched it but my inclination is to be "au naturale" if at all possible. If you have a history of recurrent miscarriages then that is another story. I would always bring any of these issues up with your doctor. If he is threatened by an informed patient it is time to find another doctor. Otherwise he should be happy to discuss with you the incidents of these side effects and the positives and negatives of your choices. It IS their job to be sure the patient understands their recommended RX and all side effects. :D

A lot of times your pharmacist can be more knowledgeable than your doctor when it comes to medications.... maybe you could call a pharmacy and ask to speak to a pharmacist.... then when armed with information call your doctor again?

I suggested talking with you OB about why you are taking it and if there are any risks to the baby if you take it. If the OB is good, he/she will have no problem discussing these issues with you. Sometimes even the nurse can let you know these things. I know the nurses at my OB are great and tell me a lot of this info without ever having to bother the dr. Hope you get an answer.

I called the office and talked with the nurse. She said my progesterone levels were good 16.5. The prescribed this because I had the m/c in May, it is just to make sure my levels stay up and decrease the chance of m/c. I am still confused about taking it, because if I am supposed to m/c for some reason shoudn't I just let that happen? You would think after being pregnant 6 times I would know what to do, but it seems something changes every time :?

Heather first of all I'm praying for you and this precious gift from God! Secondly I would pray for guidance for God--he will lead you. From personal experience, I prayed to be led to the OB/GYN that God would have me use and that I could trust in his/her guidance. God led to me a wonderful group of doctors who are very religious and pray for all of their patients and for guidance With this being said, I believe God leads them in their decisions and if they tell me I need to take a certain medicine then I do so because I know who they are going to for their guidance [amen].

God bless you!

I'm going to ditto Leslie here.
I don't like any kinds of meds during pg. I'm not liking this 'levels are good...but, just in case' thing. That just doesn't sit well with me.
And I agree, if you're supposed to m/c, just let it happen It is wonderful to hear *you* say that, having btdt previously. That is such a wonderful, God centered attitude, how strong you are!!
I can see how that would be easy for someone like me, who has never had a m/c to think/say such a thing, but you, having been through it, and are still able to say that. I think that is just fantastic and I whole-heartedly agree with that mind set.

I would definitely hound the dr about the WHYs of taking this rx. Pray about it. Weigh the pros/cons and go from there.

But, personally, my initial thought...run ;)

I was on progesterone suppositories with all 5 of my pregnancies and all 3 of my miscarriages until at least 12 weeks. From what I researched all those times taking progesterone it will not keep a pregnancy that is inevitably going to end in miscarriage, and it was true. Like I wrote I was taking the suppositiories even with my miscarriages.

Praying for you, I know the worries of pregnancy can weigh heavily on you try hard as it may be to enjoy it and leave it in God's hands. If you ever want to talk just e-mail or PM me anytime.

I took progestore pills for pregnancy but what the doctor had me do was use the oral medications a as a suppository. So my pills said not to take orally if I was pregnant but since that was not how I used them those warnings did not apply. I feel that with out the prometrium I would not have carried to term. My levels were low. Like Steph I really feel God led me to the just right OB after having trouble with dr's being very uncaring when deaing with my m/c's and so I trusted that he made the right decisions for me.

I just got off of progesterone suppositories. My doc said, and I read that the oral meds don't keep your levels up long enough because it gives you the meds quickly and then is gone from your system very fast. The vaginal suppositories are suppose to keep your levels more stable. I had to take two a day, one in the evening and one in the morning. Usually the pill form of progesterone is a synthetic form of the drug, and the suppository which has to be compounded by a pharmacy is the natural form of the drug. I read that it's not as good to go with the synthetic form. I was on the pill form when I miscarried my second baby, and we don't know if it was progesterone related or not.
Like other's said, progesterone won't stop you from miscarrying, only help if you need it! You can have lots of extra progsterone and be ok, it's when it's low is when it's bad. There are also some good studies done that say a higher level of progesterone in early pregnancy make for more and better milk after the baby is born!!

Congrats on your new little miracle!!! :-D
