View Full Version : When do they learn to blow their nose?
SoapLady 10-31-2006, 10:16 AM DS has a cold. I can get him to imitate me sniffing something but not blowing his nose. Is it too early to expect this? When did your dc learn? Any tips? It would make such a difference if he could just blow!
mom n luv 10-31-2006, 10:42 AM It looks like my DS is just 2 months older than yours. He does blow his nose but not very effectively. We use quite a bit of saline spray during a cold and that causes his nose to run more and he doesn't like that feeling so he wants to at least wipe his nose. But that said I had to pin him down today and go ahead and use the green bulby thing to suck a booger out that he kept poking at with his finger.
kanaclark 10-31-2006, 11:30 AM bri is 13 months and he can make the noise, but that's it. cant remember how old Gabe was. I'd suggest saline and the "booger bulb" or "snot sucker" whichever term of endearment you have given it.
kids hate it, but it's better than the possibilities if left alone. besides, my mom used it on me all the time and i don't remember, so I'm sure our kids will forget too. (at least we hope, LOL)
Bri keeps a cold all the time, and I can see the movie now, "Revenge of the Snotty Nosed Tyke" LOL
luvmy4sons 10-31-2006, 11:52 AM I'm sorry...but DO they learn to blow their nose? Boys that is? My 12 year old just blew his in his hands as I sat here on the computer! WHILE AT THE TABLE EATING LUNCH! NO LIE! Hmmm....could be a training problem I need to addresss! LOL!
I would have to say that for them to EVEN grasp the concept they were at least 4 if not 5! I might have slow learners though. And even now...I still have training sessions with the younger 2 BOYS, 12 and 11, on how to do it properly and neatly and in socially acceptable ways! But of course you speak only of being actually ABLE to BLOW...right? LOL!I remember that taking awhile...at least 3!
LaDonna 10-31-2006, 11:56 AM Madyson our oldest didn't learn to blow her nose till about 6 months ago and she will be 4 in Feb. Once they learn though it sure is nice.
SoapLady 10-31-2006, 12:16 PM Bummer! Sounds like I have a while to wait. I've already dug out the saline drops and suction bulb but was hoping there was a better way. Thanks for your input!
~Tara~ 10-31-2006, 12:20 PM Too many variables with this one..
How often the kid has a cold
How bad the nose is stuffed
How much the parent persists
The age of each child
Personality of each child
...... and on and on and on I'm sure
I've had one who could blow well enough around 18mo I think ??
Annnnnnnnnd that's all I remember. We are blessed to not have many cold around here for them to practice their blowing skills ;) Rarely even *1* nose blowing worthy instance a year.
But I have friends who have kids who are blowing quite well at 1, 2 and 3 years old..but...they've had more practice...those 'forever sick' kind of folks.
I, personally, would think around 2, they'd be able to imitate, but I wouldn't expect much productivity until 4, honestly.
I ditto making use of the snot sucker if so deemed necessary. Keep the house air moist, keep fluids in the child. It'll come out..eventually, one way or another, it'll come out...you just be ready with the tissue LOL
ewwwww
I think I need to go GermX my hands now LOL
Mom2Many 10-31-2006, 12:52 PM Each child is different...so there really is no "right" age. I also use the "bugger getter" and work with them to teach them to blow...and NOT in their hands! YUCK..
One way to possibly help them learn is to hold a tissue up in front of their face. Ask them to blow the tissue and do that several times (more if necessary). Then tell them to close their mouth and "blow" the tissue with their nose. Might be best to practice this when they aren't ready to blow a snot full out, as it might get kind of messy. Once they can blow the tissue with their nose, you can hold it up there and have them blow into it. :)
That has worked with my kids, but it may not work for every child. We had to practice a few times with my son, but my daugher picked it up pretty quickly.
SoapLady 10-31-2006, 01:09 PM Thanks for the tips, Amy! Sometimes it's hard for me to figure out how to teach things that are intuitive to me now.
Abby can kinda blow her nose already. She's 2 1/2. She likes to use hankys and she will try to clear her nose out even though she doesn't really know how. I like it though because she's not picking her nose EWWW I hate it when they do that. LOL
mamallama 10-31-2006, 02:58 PM I'd suggest saline and the "booger bulb" or "snot sucker" whichever term of endearment you have given it.
I call it the "booger extracter"! LOL
My daughter is three and she now can go get the tissue, blow her nose and throw it away. Yay!!

Ok I am sitting here trying to be very quiet & not laugh too loud as I am in the same room as a sleeping baby and I just read what you wrote!!! It was very hard to not laugh out loud!!!!! [rotfl]
Anyway my oldest ds is almost 3 1/2 yr old and he is suprisingly pretty good at blowing his nose when we ask him but most of the time it doesn't make it to the tissue [whatwacko]
Mine were all different ages. The oldest was about 2 (does an okay job, not great), the middle one still doesn't get it and the baby learned before he was a year old (and is by far the best at it).
yup, saline drops and the booger getter!
