View Full Version : Maybe he is ready...
ChelleFish 10-29-2006, 07:02 PM When we picked our son, who will be 2 1/2 in November, from nursery today at church, the lady said, "I hope you don't mind, my husband took him potty."
We looked at her and said, "What?"
"yeah, he kept saying potty and we didn't not want ot take him in case you ahve been working on training, so he took him and he went."
"What?! Really?! Cool. No, we haven't really been working on it, but thanks!"
For a while now, when we go out to eat or go to a store, when we get ready to leave, he says potty and my husband takes him in and sits him down and almost as soon he says done and flushes and they wash hands. He has never went for real either out, at home or at the sitter.
So, time for pull ups? Or just keep diapering and "working" on it at his own pace?
jengrant 10-29-2006, 07:15 PM This isn't coming from experience, but my gut reaction would be that he's ready. Mine is almost 2 and is starting to show signs, wanting to sit on the potty but not doing anything. We're still in diapers, I don't think he is quite ready yet, but getting there, but if he actually went, I would start training. Like I said, I have no prior experience, I am just getting into this now myself.
jen1981 10-30-2006, 12:26 AM Sounds to me like he is ready! We did pull-ups as a reward for going potty in the "big" potty chair, then to underwear once they were going regularly. He might like a small potty chair too. If he isn't quite ready, don't worry about it.
~Tara~ 10-30-2006, 09:29 AM I'd keep encouraging it. If his diapers are staying dry more often than they're wet, I'd get him some undies.
With my first two, oh it was so funny, their differences...#1 would pee in his underwear every single time. He *would* go in the potty, if caught in time, but if he was wearing anything, he went in it. He trained naked. Once he was naked, it was fine, he'd just run to the bathroom when he had to go. Then came child #2, the opposite, if he was naked, he'd pee all down his legs and all over the floor. But his diapers were staying dry. So, I got him undies. He did well with that, rushing to the potty when he had to go. He did NOT like accidents in his undies. Those were VERY few. (I switched to cloth when he was a little over 1 yr. shortly thereafter he was dry all night, then he was going potty with dry diapers during the day, he rarely had an accident, was fully 'trained' by 18 months I do believe and never ever peed the bed at night. The child still amazes me LOL)
emilyrosejewel 11-01-2006, 09:28 PM That is wonderful, I would definitely start trying to potty train with that kind of response. Take it at his pace. If he backs off and doesn't show interest then back off. From talking to friends it seems that it is sometimes one step forward, one back, but then some just take off. It must vary from child to child. But go for it if there is interest. Good luck!
DianaLynn 11-16-2006, 11:56 AM When my oldest son was almost 2 he started acting interested by going into the bathroom and trying to sit on the toilet. I jumped on it immediately and he was potty trained within days. I am a firm believer in jumping on it when they show interest because that interest may not last otherwise. It is so much easier when they are excited about it! Happy potty training!
