View Full Version : Nursing question??
Reneemomto5 10-21-2006, 06:53 PM Hi moms, Amanda is 19 months old and still a pretty strong nurser, nap, bedtime and a couple times at night. The past few days she is either coming down with a cold or teething or just needs extra comfort and has been nursing more frequently. Meaning almost every 3 or 4 hours, yikes.
But now with her stronger suck and more frequent nursings I am SORE. I wince when she utters the word "nurse." My question to use cream or not to use cream. I cracked when she was a baby once and did use cream for the blood because I would stick to my bra and rip open. But do you use cream if there is no cut, just very sore? Is ther something else I could apply. And going bra free isn't an option, I have to wear a bra 24/7 because it always leads to let down if I don't.
Thanks in advance.
~Tara~ 10-21-2006, 08:16 PM I'd go ahead and put some lanolin on there. It seems to aid in all of that discomfort, not limited to the cracked/bleeding part.
My nursling is going through a 'stronger suck' phase too. Must be related to teething. I can't recall for sure if my others did this too. They all blend together after a while ya know? ;) heehee I know they, too, had their moments, I just don't know if thet coincided with teething.
Anywho, I'd go with lanolin :)
Godzgirl 10-21-2006, 08:26 PM I agree with Tara go with some lanolin.
stephwhiz 10-21-2006, 08:38 PM Lanolin works wonders with sore nipples. Also really cold cabbage leaves helps out too. Stephanie :D
jen1981 10-22-2006, 01:58 AM This has worked really well for me. Put lanolin on nursing pads and put them in your bra. It keeps the lanolin on there all day, even after your baby has nursed.
Reneemomto5 10-22-2006, 01:20 PM Thanks ladies, I wasn't sure if applying lanolin would make the problem worse by making the skin softer. I thought maybe I should just grin and bear it kind of thing.
Oh and cabbage leaves do work wonders with mastitus infections, I used it in prior breast infections. I agree the cabbage is great for stuff like that.
And putting lanolin on the breast pad, perfect idea. Now I just have to go buy some lanolin, I can't find it becasue its been over a year since I needed it.
~Tara~ 10-22-2006, 05:07 PM I have 2 tubes!! I had some, it got left in my birth kit. Then I needed it and couldn't find it. Found it AFTER I purchased another.
Wish I could just fax it over for ya
love2bmom 10-23-2006, 11:19 AM I have so many tubes around here.. I hope you are better soon. I just bite my tongue for a second & count to ten.. that seems to take my mind off the pain.

That's a really good idea, I'll have to remember that for the next one!
I never once had sore nipples...how crazy is that!? My daughter was a great nurser from day one...and I'm SO glad that I never got pain from it. I'm sorry to hear that you're going through this...and I'm sorry that I can't help you out.
I went through that phase with each ds more than once. I found that by comforting HIM in other ways, it took the 'overeagerness' out of nursing and we were both happier. I also second or third or fourth the lanolin.
teething - frozen washcloths, teethers, Hyland's tablets, baby Tylenol, baby orajel, frozen fruit pops or in a baby safe feeder, bottles of ice water...
other - extra story time, walks, wearing baby, good old rock and bounce.
Cheeseburger 10-27-2006, 04:18 PM Hey. I had a hard time starting breastfeeding because I am allergic to wool, and guess where lanolin comes from?? LOL no lansinoh for me, even though that's all they had at the hospital! Anyway my friend (who also has lanolin allergies) showed me Palmers Nursing Cream - it's the only one on the market without lanolin i've found.
Just wanted to let you all know in case you know someone who might not be able to use lansinoh and is planning on breastfeeding. It's Palmers Cocoa Butter Formula Nursing Cream and it comes in a 1.1 oz tube. It's here at drugstore.com but other websites probably sell it too

Just spreading some info hoping it might help somebody. :)

~Tara~ 10-27-2006, 06:25 PM Oh good, thanks for that info. I don't have a problem with lanolin when used as mentioned above, but noticed a sensitivity when I used it around my mouth.
I was applying some to my dd's mouth last week, licking lips thing, well, had just a smidge left on my finger, my lips could use a refresher as well...it ended up making matters worse. I was itchy and flakey where I applied the lanolin. Never would have thought it. Never had a reaction otherwise.
Reneemomto5 10-28-2006, 10:10 AM Thanks ladies your extra tubes of lanolin would have certainly come in handy. Mandy has eased up some. I seem to notice when she is getting more teeth, each time her suck changes. Like she is adapting her suck to the new teeth. Oh I don't know, I never nursed more than 3 months before so this is all new territory.
But man is she still nurses quite frequently for what I thought a 19 month old should, that sometimes concerns me. Especially when everyone keeps saying with suprise "oh she is STILL nursing!" I feel like I need to almost hide the fact she still does.
Thanks Nichole for the info on your allergy to lan. I don't have that either but its good to pass on to others.
