View Full Version : PT'ing with loose stools
BlessedMommy 11-19-2008, 06:52 AM My DD is doing excellent with PT'ing, but her stools have seemed to pose a problem. They're not diarahea (sp?) by any means, but they are loose, and it can be challenging for her to get to the potty in time. Yesterday, she told me that she had to go, and by the time I got her to the toilet (it was a little ways away) she was already going/had gone in her pants.
Should I give her foods to firm her stools up a bit? If so, what types of foods are good?
I imagine that I can chalk some of it up to her nursing, since colostrum is laxative. Oh well, *shrugs*, at least she isn't constipated.
Any other suggestions?
PianoMama 11-19-2008, 08:20 AM Hmmm, don't really have any suggestions, but ds's is like that. It was very hard for him to get to the toilet in time. He has since learned, but it was a m.e.s.s. when he was learning and didn't make it. I guess I'm just I know what you're going through. I guess things that are supposed help it become more firm would be cheese and other diary things. But, I'm not sure if you do dairy?? Hope you find something...:-D
mamallama 11-19-2008, 09:20 AM We went through that for a while. Honestly there is no way but through it. LOL Not what you wanted to hear right? But when they have bowel movements like that - you just can't expect them to get to the potty in time always. It's just hard.....and messy. :-P LOL But just explain to Hannah that you understand when she has those kinds of accidents. That goes a long way with kids when you express to them that you understand. Then *really* applaude her when she does make it. But I'm sure you already do this. You are a good mommy! ;)
I am with Kate, you might offer some foods to help firm her stools a bit to see if that helps. My first thought was dairy too. Do you feed her dairy?
BlessedMommy 11-19-2008, 09:49 AM Thanks ladies, for the input. Hmmm, dairy is out. Are there any other foods that might help?
Ashlee 11-19-2008, 10:15 AM Think iron!
yup, iron (raisins) and rice.
bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast... that's the BRAT diet for diarrhea. worth a try IMO.
It's funny that so many suggested dairy, as that's what was giving my poor guy loose stools for 5 years of his life!!
Katielady 11-19-2008, 08:07 PM BRAT diet is more for soothing purposes than binding. Applesauce actually has a laxative effect. But bananas and rice are really good. Fiber supplements help too. Usually used for constipation, but they have a "bulking" effect too.
Good luck! Our 3 and 5 year olds still have loose stools. It is indeed a mess and ugh....I understand and feel for you.
justmeNmine 11-19-2008, 10:39 PM Yep I was thinking bananas. I recently learned that the combo of bananas and applesauce is so that the banana helps firm the stool and the applesauce helps it to pass once formed. Becaus eo fher (awesome :)) diet, she probably has naturally soft bm, so just an added banana might do the trick? Also, if you can sort of pin point an approximate tiem that she seems to bm, havign her sit on the potty and "push out the poo" might help- that i swhat I do with my dd, who used to almost always go #2 in the morning and now tends to go right after lunch.
Ashlee 11-19-2008, 10:55 PM I thought about bananas too but then remembered her allergy. Is that something you think she's grown out of?

She can eat them fine with no apparent ill effects now. Good memory! For some reason, though, she doesn't seem to like them much, unless I doctor them up a bit.
