View Full Version : Weird Nursing Question
Crissyanna 10-15-2006, 07:41 PM Ok, so this may sound a little odd. But has any other nursing mom's noticed that their baby prefers one side to the other? Dainyah will eat off my right side, but never for as long, nor will she latch as well as she does on my left side. I know she is eating enough. She is gaining weight like she should. I was just kind of curious about this.
Thanks!
danou 10-15-2006, 07:50 PM yes- joshua has a preferred side as well- right from the get go! Nurses told me that this is normal... if ine side gets too full, just express by hand tp relieve pressure.
stephwhiz 10-15-2006, 08:31 PM Both of my babies preferred the left breast. I always produced more milk onb that side and that breast is bigger than the other one now too. Stephanie :D
Crissyanna 10-15-2006, 08:48 PM I just figured it may be because we tried the left one first in the delivery room. However, I am left handed, and I think she may be too (already, early I know, but she seems to prefer her left arm over her right already and when she is on my left, that side is up so she can fling that arm. Unlike being on the other side when her left side is constrained). I don't think it is because of a greater milk production on that side. They seem pretty equal, and I think I have enough milk to feed another baby or two.....
I need to go and get something out of the puppy's mouth. Again. She is worse than a toddler.
Glad to know this is realitvely normal. Maybe I have a fellow leftie on my hands. That would be neat. Both my husband and I are lefties, so we have a greater than the average parent chance of having more lefty kids! Fine by me. It took forever for my righty mom to teach me to tie my shoes.
Yep, both boys preferred my left side
I wondered if I was subconciously putting them on the left more than the right, because I'm right-handed, and so it left my right side free to do other things :P
BlessedMommy 10-15-2006, 09:15 PM That's not a weird question at all Crystal. There's a mom at my church who's still nursing her almost 2 year old son and her milk on her left side is nearly dried up because her son prefers the right side. [rofl] So that definitely happens. I don't know that Hannah has a preferred side but I know that I do! I prefer my right side. Maybe because I'm right handed.
luvmy4sons 10-16-2006, 06:37 AM ABSOLUTELY! By the time my fourth was 1 year old he completely quit nursing off the one side. My body adjusted. It was weird. From 1 year to 21 months he nursed only on one side! LOL! Talk about lopsided!!!
~Tara~ 10-16-2006, 12:45 PM Oh yes, all of mine have had their moments of preferring one side over the other.
I swear they must think the one side has chocolate milk or something sometimes hehehe
A friend and I joked once about this...she's like, honey, I don't know what you think you'll get different out of that side..I don't have chocolate and plain, or even strawberry..it's all the same flavor. Deal with it! LOL
Related question: In the last months of pregnancy, did any of you have more leaking of colostrum from one breast than the other? I'm curious as to whether your more prenatally productive breast turned out to be the "preferred" one, since I leak most noticably and most often from my left breast.
Crissyanna 10-16-2006, 06:03 PM Sorry Em, but I didn't really leak out of either of mine. I did if I squeezed them, but not normally on their own. I really don't know. Guess you could keep tabs on it and let us know when your baby comes.
Hi Em, I leaked alot during pregnancy but I can't remember if I leaked more out of one side. But dd used to prefer the left breast but now she has no preference. I don't know if it's that she preferred that particular breast or if she just liked laying on that particular side.
~Tara~ 10-16-2006, 06:35 PM I leak like a fountain from either side, no preference there LOL
Yeah both Abby and Sophie preferred one to the other. I think Abby preferred the left and Sophie preferred the right. But I also noticed during pregnancy that I leaked more from one than the other and the one that produced more was the one that baby preferred. So I always thought it was that one was producing more than the other. Who knows.

Yes and yes. I leaked more from my left breast and that's the one that Sophie preferred.

Ditto.. DD prefers left. I actually have to let her eat off the left side first & then switch to the right. Otherwise I will get a clogged duct in the left. I haven't had one in sometime.. but ouchy!
