View Full Version : Nighttime cloth diapering
BlessedMommy 10-12-2006, 07:40 PM Okay, here's my problem: my daughter is highly sensitive and hates wet diapers! That wouldn't be a problem, except for it exhausts me to get up and change her several times a night. So I've gone to disposables at night.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a good nighttime diaper? (I've already tried Fuzzi Bunz, do they work better with a doubler though?)
at night we use a FB with 2 microterry and 2 hemp inserts. It is a little bulky and not all kids will tolerate that.
we did the nighttime Pampers, too, when we first started doing CD. We cut down the kids liquid intake before bedtime, and everyone has been much happier, but you can't really do that with a baby so if you need to use a nighttime sposie, then buy the nice kind, and don't feel bad about it. Your dd needs her rest and so do you! :)
BlessedMommy 10-12-2006, 08:12 PM Rach, I been doing a little reading on the net and one good nighttime suggestion that I've ran into are fitted diapers. Do you know how well they work as a nighttime diaper? (i.e. Kissaluvs, etc.)
BlessedMommy 10-12-2006, 08:13 PM By the way, what's a sposie?
sposie=disposable
I loved fitted diapers for 0-9 mo. We used the nylon pants and we had some wool, too. We had Kissaluvs, very good, I also had some made by a WAHM over on your side of the state. theclothcasa.com
also you can see swaddlebees by clicking here (http://www.treecitydiapers.com/store/WsDefault.asp?Cat=ClothDiapers&Sub=98&isThumbs=Yes&Thumbs=100). They are another great brand.
BlessedMommy 10-12-2006, 11:20 PM I guess that I can't really go wrong with buying a nighttime diaper, because if it doesn't work for nighttime use, I can always use it during the daytime. (I know that I will use virtually any diaper because I even use the Gerber prefolds that someone gave me as a baby gift. LOL.)
Did you find that you really liked the fitted dipes for nighttime or did you use pampers during that time? Also, have you personally tried Swaddlebees or have you just heard good recommendations for them?
Ruth - all I can say is keep to the disposables at night! That is what we are doing! You need your sleep... mmm well I guess I was really unhelpful in this department since you WANT TO KNOW of a good CD for night time. LOL!
Matilda never wakes up due to a wet bum in the night... she only googles around for a feed. I don't see any reason to make my life hard by trying to CD her and wake up for that reason as well
Works for us :D
~Tara~ 10-13-2006, 10:01 AM I've always used fitteds at night. I use primarily fitteds anywho ;) doesn't matter day/night use
But with this one, I just don't have anything that fits/works well enough.
Do you have a wool soaker, Ruth? Those can be very nice for night time use. A nice fitted..something hemp terry ?? An insert or two of the same, then a microfleece liner to wick moisture away from the babe. Then cover it all with a wool cover/soaker.
I never had a 'real' wool soaker. I salvaged an old wool sweater from Goodwill, felted it and sewed my own. It worked alright, but darn it was bulky. I'd much rather have the fancy ones I see online. Either felted or crochet, they look dreamy. And not quite as bulky...baby can't move in mine, looks like a sumo wrestler or something teehee legs sprawled out .. anywho..
Yes I definitely like fitteds for night time. As they get older, a small prefold IN a fitted works nicely. But never prefolds only at night, nope, that would just never work for any of mine.
But as I've said before...I don't have a night time set up here. So Gabriel's been in cheap disposables at night from very early on. Funny, I can only use the cheap ones with him..WalMart's Parent's Choice..He broke out with Luvs, horribly!!! Oh my goodness it was awful! I've never had a child sensitive to particular dipes, oh this was just baaaaad :( One diaper broke him out severely, took DAYS to begin to recover. He reacted to another brand or two as well. So, cheap Parent's Choice it is for us. Weird huh? But, it gets us through the night, no leaks, no fuss, no reaction. We're ok with that ;)
Look into Mother Ease Sandies, some hemp terry inserts, fleece liners (you can just cut some strips yourself) and a wool cover (Aristocrat, um, what's the other one I'm thinking of ... oh shoot...it was *right there* argh...it'll come to me later and I'll post if nobody else 'finds' it for me hehe) If you have the $ to spend on new cloth stuff, there ya go, look into those, hth :)
~Tara~ 10-13-2006, 10:05 AM A quick link on "why wool?" in case you weren't familiar with 'why wool' haha
http://www.cutofcloth.com/article_wool.asp
Oh oh..found it...the other cover I was thinking of. 'Course, there are LOTS of covers out there...I was just trying to give you another name with which I was familiar. Here it is: http://www.earthbaby.com/bumpywool.html Imse Vimse Bumpy wool cover
Like I said, I've not used either. But have heard rave reviews about both. These would be what *I* would try. You can go from there, do a search for 'wool diaper covers' and gobs of links will show. :)
just heard good things about swaddlebees from people I know in person, never used them. my dh will only use the Wonderoos and FB so that's what I bought the most of and over time, phased out the rest. But when I was not working and I did all the diapering I put the 'prettier' diapers on him,
When I first started cloth diapering I could not figure out how to make a diaper last all night so we just used the Pampers. I used my fitteds during the day. I always kept my babies in bed with me so I for sure didn't want any leaks! :D
After a while, I was getting good naptime and extended times with no leaks, and eventually I figured out how to make an overnight diaper for each child. On the other board that I'm on we have compared and everyone does something different so I imagine even if I tell you what works for us, it may not work for you. If you want to do 100% cloth, you need to do some experimentation. If you are happy to do 90%, cool, keep using a sposie at night. Your dd is still getting benefits of cloth diapers, and a good night's sleep, which I think is worth almost anything!
kanaclark 10-15-2006, 12:25 PM Tara, don't think your little Gabe is weird (does he go by Gabe or are we still in the Gabriel stage?)
With our Gabe, all he could wear were luvs, Bri could wear luvs, target store brand, and parent's choice. Now, patrick is here and he can ONLY wear the el'cheapo's from family dollar! I'm not complaining, about it though.
we had similar rash problems with all three of them with the huggies and pampers. When patrick was born, the doctor in the hospital kept saying, "I've never seen a newborn with diaper rash." I had the parent's choice with me for him and he cleared up a little, but not much, my aunt sent some dollar store dipes and they worked perfect.
Right now, we're not doing any cloth b/c the diapers we have are all too small for Bri (we're gonna start PT'ing in the spring, so chose sposies till then) and are too BIG for Patrick (his heiney is soooooo small, i asked brian if it was even there, LOL)
Ruth, sorry I don't have any suggestions. we always used sposies at night just out of conveinance.
~Tara~ 10-16-2006, 12:41 PM He's Gabriel ;) (and Benjamin is Benjamin hehe)
Anywho..
I just always hear of folks having to spend MORE $ because of their kids dipe sensitivity. I thought that was weird that mine can only tolerate the cheaper ones. Like you though, I'm sure not complaining :) $6 gets us what...3 weeks? I can deal with that LOL
Oh and LOL on your no hiney child..Gabriel is one of those too...takes after brother #2
kanaclark 10-16-2006, 04:19 PM our Gabriel is gabe, Brian is Bri and Patrick is patch.
you know, though, i wonder if the "we have to buy the high dollar dipes" parents ever tried the cheaper ones
~Tara~ 10-16-2006, 04:28 PM Aaaah I wondered what Bri was short for (if anything) I automatically said "bree" as I have a cousin Bri - short for Brianna, so I couldn't get that out of my head..I knew your Bri was a boy, so that just did NOT connect for me LOL
As for the cheap diapers thing...well, the one friend I know who had problems with hers..she *did* try the cheap ones. What's 'worse' is that she at one time had 2 in dipes and couldn't use the same brand. She tried cheaper brands for each..one could only wear Luvs, the other, only Pampers. How odd is that? :?
Gabriel has been my only sensitive dipe kid. Each have been in disposables for some period...kids #3 and 4 were in them for a bit while I was pregnant with the next..that whole sickness thing, I could barely manage our clothes getting washed, diapers was just toooo much for me.
BlessedMommy 10-16-2006, 06:16 PM Well, I'll do some thinking about cloth and researching about it until I run out of the disposables from my shower. Plus, using cloth for nighttime gives me an excuse to buy more cloth diapers. hehe
