When my DH and I were pregnant with Hannah, we took a Bradley class to prepare for the birth. There was only one other couple in the class. They ended up having their baby by emergency C-section under general anesthesia after 23 hours of labor, a mal-positioned baby, and fetal distress. It was a hospital transport, because they were planning a home birth.

So this lady, Angela, tells me at the beginning of this year that they were expecting again. I was so excited for her and really hoped that she could get a VBAC, as that was what she really wanted!

I just got a call from her and she said that they had their baby, a little boy, this month. Here was the general birth story:
She started feeling as though her water may have broke around 36-37 weeks. She called her midwife and her midwife informed her that she couldn't have a homebirth, since it was too early. (That midwife apparently doesn't like you to go before 38 weeks) Angela was heartbroken, because she didn't want to go to the hospital, but didn't know what else to do, if her midwife couldn't do the birth at home. She and her husband had read up on unassisted childbirth, but didn't really feel fully comfortable with it. So contractions started and she hopped in her jacuzzi with her husband to relax. The contractions starting getting quite intense and close together and so they called her midwife and asked her what to do. She said for them to go to the hospital and she would meet them there.

Pedro (her husband) finally with the help of Angela's friend that came to help with her 2 year old, pried her out of the hot tub and got her into the car. Angela then said, "Pedro, I'm not going anywhere!" Pedro said, "No, we have to go to the hospital." Angela replied, "I'm having this baby right here!" Angela got down on her hands and knees, and with one or two pushes, little baby Ezekiel was born. Angela said, "Okay you can go ahead and call 911 so that they can check out the baby and make sure that he's okay, but call L & D and tell them that we won't be coming in."

Note: Her labor was about 2 hours and 15 minutes from the time the contractions started to the time that the baby was born.

A little while later the firemen arrived to check things out! Little baby Ezekiel was perfectly healthy and weighed 6 pounds, 8 ounces. So he probably was a 37 weeker or so.

I was so happy for my friend that she got her VBAC and thought that this was just a very interesting story, so I thought that I'd share. :D
