View Full Version : I survived "the talk"

 [preggostorkgirl] :?:
Oh boy..She sprung that one on me..Praise God I had just bought this book " The wonderful way babies are made"..I had just bought it last week..My MIL has always sort of intruded upon the "special" moments...She taught her to bake cookies, she taught her to be absolutely scared to death of the water she once loved  etc..

I was NOT going to let her tell my child where babies come from and their conversation has lately been inching in that direction...So when Angela became more and more interested in the whole "love making" and "big belly" topics, I pulled out the book and we read...The whole book is seperated into larger print and small print..The large print rhymes and is for ages 3-8 and the smaller print for ages 9 and up..

Angela had one question after all of this was read..One of those silent "kill me now" Mommy moments [whathelp]

"What would happen if someone became not a virgin before they got married?"

Wow! Thats just not what you expect to hear from your 7yr old

At first I asked her to repeat because I was just  Then she got  I had to convince her that it was okay to tell me [whatheadagainstthewall]

I told her how very very very very very very special it is to be married before you make love...but then that not doing so would be going against God's Word but that God loves us and would forgive anyone who did go against him...But that we always want to do what the Bible says [OK]

Okay well I survived...I had no idea...My mother threw a pink pregnancy book at me and said " Don't end up like your sister! " [rofl] I hope maybe I did a little better than that...

Gee I just can't wait till we read the smaller print [whatliar]

I feel like I need a drink and I don't drink [whatwacko]

Please somebody tell me I did okay with this and haven't completely messed up my kid [whateww]

 Thanks Tara! I really needed to hear that and the drink didn't hurt either <seeing how its imaginary and all>

Whoa...Her next question was about miscarriage OUCH That was tough to talk about  I didn't cry..wanted to but didn't...She tells me she has a brother and sister in heaven which is strange because we named our first a girl and our second a boy but we never told anyone about them....She still insists she has a brother and a sister in heaven...Wonder where she got that idea...

anyway I do hope she will go back to playing with magnatex or Barbie because I don't think my heart can take anymore "talk" for today

Oh thats hilarious Joy! My sister told me when I was 9 and totally uninterested...I was a tom boy and couldn't have cared less..After all, Mother had thrown the book at me...Thought I knew all there was to know..

Your son cracks me up!

Oh and thankyou, your opinion matters plenty :D

It is so awesome that you have started the dialog now, rather than 5 years from now when she would probably be too embarassed and self-conscious to ask a lot of questions. Good job!

Boy oh boy do I dreeeeeeeeead that day. Thank you for giving me a little bit of courage for it anglesmom! 8)

What do you tell a child who is 5? My girl is pretty mature for her age, always has been a "growny" type. She's my first and only baby and I don't have a clue what to tell her or whether to say anything or not. Does anyone know of any online resources or articles I could read?

Thanks :)

I recommend this book I have...I've decided to keep it to give to Angela when her time comes to survive the talk..

The Wonderful Way that Babies Are Made
Larry Christenson

It has big print for ages 3-8 and small print for ages 9 and up

It still doesn't give extreme details but its a basic starting point
