I thought I'd give solids a whirl today, but I should have known better. I was thinking that we could overcome the lingering tongue-thrust reflex, especially since she's acting so interested in eating. So, I mixed up a bit of oatmeal for her, scooped a couple of bites in her mouth, and her not a speck of it stayed in her mouth. Every bit was all over her bib! Guess we'll give it a bit of time before we try again!

LOL! Good for you, Bev, for not forcing them on her. She'll eat when she's ready. From what I've read anyway, eating solids before a baby is a year old is more for fun and practice than for nutrition. Mama's milk should still be their main staple anyway.
How old is your daughter, btw?

She's only five months old. I wasn't going to try until her tongue-thrust diappeared, but she's been grabbing at my food when I'm eating and watching very intently, and I thought I'd just try and see. Now, I know she's nowhere near ready, lol

Hey Bev, yeah kids will eat when they are ready. One thing though you could try something else if you do think you baby is ready. I know my daughter didn't like the baby cereal or oatmeal but she did like the baby foods. Anyway, just a suggestion. Like Ruth said it's really so they get used to eating solids.

My 8 month old watches very intently as well. He now sits in a high chair at the table, to be part of 'everything' ya know? But he doesn't eat anything. He has had the teeniest, tiniest nibble of banana, as I was eating one. He managed to keep it in, then opened his mouth in anticipation for another. I obliged. And that was it. Potatoes didn't fair as well. He tried really hard, one smidge got down, that was it. These were teeny little bits I tell ya, like, not even as big as the smileys to the left here LOL
Nah, he's not ready. I was just letting him see what it was all about, as everything else goes to his mouth at this age/stage.
It's funny though isn't it? Sure, they watch intently and even grab, but that in and of itself doesn't mean they're ready.
Good for you for paying attention :)

Yeah, what is it with mashed potatoes? Neither of mine liked 'em. Yet everyone said, "Oh, try 'em they'll like 'em" Uh...nope! But boy are the dogs appreciative of all the children's contributions!
Anyway...BOT...do what YOU feel best for your little one. Best of luck...in the future  ~Kerri
