View Full Version : Tongue Tied
mom n luv 10-02-2006, 10:39 PM Has any one had a little one who was tongue tied? If so did you have it clipped why or why not? Did insurance cover it?
DS#2 is tongue tied but it doesn't interfere with feeding. DR said we could leave it becasue it shouldn't cause speech problems but she wants us to go to an ENT to have it looked at. She said we could have it clipped [whatrunningscared] probably at that appointment. She said it would be primarily so he could stick his tongue out like everybody else. She said they clip it while he is awake right there in the office and she is very lucky she wasn't pulling me up off the floor right then.
I was already on edge becasue I was delusional enough to think that getting my 2 month old and 20 month old to the doctors including shots for both of them would be a piece of cake. But that could be a whole other thread on the lapses in rationality that I believe motherhood ( maybe just lack of sleep)causes.
Anyway, I just would like to hear from someone who went through it to help us decide what we are going to do. I am not to worried but I would just like to be prepared.
It might be nice to have a kid who couldn't stick his tongue out at me.
My friend's doctor was clipping her newborn daughter before she knew what was happening..They didn't so much as discuss it with her..They just had her hold her baby down and went to clipping  I never knew of any other babies but my late BIL did not have his clipped as a baby and he went through life normal he just couldn't stick his tongue out...Guess I'm no help...sorry
Godzgirl 10-03-2006, 01:03 AM Wow, i've never heard of this. The procedure sounds painful :( Like when ds got circumcized. DH and I were their while it was taking place. The doctor said it doesn't hurt but i felt like i was going to faint.
mom n luv 10-03-2006, 01:49 PM Did your BIL mind not being able to stick out his tongue?
If he did he didn't show it...It was a big joke to him...He also proudly showed off his 3rd thumb
Momof4now 10-03-2006, 06:35 PM My ds was tongue-tied when he was born but the dr. noticed it right away...as soon as he was delivered and put on the warmer. The dr. clipped his tongue right then & there...guess I didn't really consider it a big deal. I'd probably think differently though if he would've been more than a minute or two old when it was clipped!
irishmum2boys 10-03-2006, 07:35 PM Like when dd got circumcized.
Did you mean ds???
I have no experience w/ tongue clipping either. I do know a little boy who was tongue tied and his speech was very poor & after the procedure there was a huge difference.

Yeah, LOL! [rofl] Let me go change that.
My neice was toung tied and it had to be clipped b/c she could not latch on to eat. So they had the procedure done. From what I can remember, it was not that bad. She is 13 now and has had not effects from it. :D
JeanineAnne 10-04-2006, 10:17 AM My daughter was tongue-tied and they clipped at 6 months...yes it was covered by insurance. She cried just a bit and it didn't bleed as much as I thought she would. Today, you would never have known (she will be 10 on Christmas Eve).
There are several people on her father's side (including her dad) that was tongue-tied. Doctor felt we should clip it to avoid any possible speech problems, so we did.
mom n luv 10-12-2006, 10:12 PM Well we went into the ENT today and she went ahead and clipped Eriks tongue. They let me go to the waiting room while they did it. He was already almost completely calm by the time I got back there the whole appointment lasted like 20 minutes. He didn't even have a red face from crying so he must not have cried very long or hard.
I was amazed nursing changed quite a bit his latch is so much better and he did not pop off and on as he typically does. He also is very cute becase he is moving his tongue all around and sticking it out like he is discovering his tongue for the first time.
I am so glad it is over.
tobikay 10-15-2006, 08:47 AM How did I miss this? My ds was tounge tied, I wasn't told anything about it until he was about 2 1/2 and we had to go to the dentist. He had some work done and while he was numb, they went ahead and clipped it. Seemed to me that it bled and bled and bled, but he was numb and not bothered by it at all... in fact, he slept in the car on the way home and is fine ever since.
danou 10-15-2006, 07:58 PM my ds is also tongue tied- every person we speak to has a varying opinion of whether to get it cut or not... my dh is leaning towards it... I don't care as it's not causing latch issues. One person said that by age 10 they've often broken it themselves by falling or somehting like that.
mom n luv 10-15-2006, 09:10 PM We waivered some on getting it clipped. DS was latching just fine. When I talked to the ENT she said you don't know which ones will cause speech problems and by the time you find out you it would be to late to do the in office procedure. She said she just clipped one for a 13 year old and he had be hospitalized and go under general anesthesia. She actually said that after 3 1/2 months the in ooffice procedure was not possible, but obviously it can be done since tobikay's son was clipped at 2 1/2.
Even though he was latching before it was clipped he is a much more effecient nurser now and he can handle bottles alot better as well.
Whatever you decide I hope it all goes well.
