View Full Version : Diaper bag /hospital
1Cor13 09-29-2006, 06:51 AM I was just wondering for those that had their babies, what did you pack for your hospital bag????
What did you find you needed, but did not bring and what idyou have that you did NOT need to bring??
mommyb 09-29-2006, 12:51 PM Warm clothes was about all I had to bring. The hospital gives you diapers. You might want to bring some bottles and have your dh buy some formula after you find out what kind of formula the hospital is going to put your baby on. Also, bring baby wipes b/c the hospital I went to to have dd only gave us these rough, almost like paper towel things to wipe her bottom with! :roll:
All we brought was clothes. The hospital provided diapers, pacie, nasal tube (sucker-thingy), and vaseline. We didn't use wipes, but warm washclothes b/c of the alochol in the wipes. It burns nb's bottoms :(
I would also suggest if you are going to ff, then do get the bottles and foumula you prefer and take that as well!

Kensbev 09-29-2006, 09:42 PM When I had Audrey, I totally overpacked for her. So, when I had Tory, I brought a couple of sleepers (one preemie and one newborn) and that was all we really needed. Actually, all we needed was a going home outfit, but I wanted to dress her while we were staying in the hospital.
The hospital supplied the diapers, as most of the women are telling you. Just check on the size they provide. I have a friend in CA who had a cesarean, so they stayed a little longer in the hospital then normal, and all the hospital provided was size 1 diapers. Which were giant on her son at first. I don't know what she did about it, but she told me over the phone the next day that Scott's diapers practically fell off him when she picked him up!
Angie-mom2CnD 09-29-2006, 10:13 PM One thing that I threw in my bag at the last min. and am glad I brought was pjs to wear after I got sick of wearing the hospital gowns. Plus my feet were always cold and since I spent the first 4 hours there on my feet walking the halls, I took some socks with no slip treads on the bottom. That way I could keep my socks on when I rested in bed and then got back up to walk again.
Also, I "planned" on having a natural birth, but ended up getting an epidural and went the opposite way of all plans. You should pack stuff that you would need if you change your mind about your "plans". Even if you highly doubt you'd need it, stick in there, or at least in your car (your hubby can go get it if needed) JUST IN CASE.
Hope that helps and I wish you God's blessings!

BlessedMommy 09-30-2006, 09:45 AM Well I didn't have my baby in a hospital, but one thing that was sure nice to have around was food and drink! :) I've heard hospital food isn't the best, so I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to bring reinforcements from home.
mommyb 10-02-2006, 04:19 PM Oh! Bring a robe too! Those gowns can show a little too much skin (especially if your like me and can't figure out how to put them on right) and might be a little chilly!
MommaBear 10-02-2006, 08:36 PM Somethin to read! Man! Sometimes the time passed SO slow! I was glad I brought my book! Silly huh? Other than that, clothes for baby and I to go home in and toiletries I didn't bring much else. HTH ~Kerri
BornInSeptember 10-05-2006, 07:49 PM * Tooth brushes for everyone (You and your partner) and Tooth paste
* Pillows from home (Use colored cases to distinguish from your birth place's linens)
* Camera with film/memory card and batteries/battery charger or Camcorder with charged batteries and accessories, double check you have all your chargers.
* Signed copies of your birth plan
* Water bottle for ice.
* Chux or other waterproof pads for chairs, bed and car in case your water breaks on the way to the hospital/at home.
* Any clothes of your own that you wish to wear - breast feeding tops/cami's, stretchy comfortable pants, black preferably, socks, multiple pairs of old underwear (wear and toss.)
* List of people to call after the baby is born (include childbirth educator), calling card, cell phone with charger.
* Change of clothes for partner, including swim trunks for shower or pool
* Baby Book for getting the foot prints done by the nurse when she does the paperwork
* Focal Point (If you want one)
* Special foods or drinks (Spree candies, suckers, other hard sucking candies- ask ahead of time if they are ok, and what drinks are ok, if any)
* Snacks for labor support
* book, cross word puzzles
* Nursing bras and pads (preferably the washable, soft ones.)
* Breastfeeding book
* Going home outfit for baby, 2 different sizes.
* Two sleepers- some hospitals have longer stays and do not provide clothes
* Large soft blanket for Baby, for swaddling, feeding etc.
* Robe, wear the hospital clothes as long as you can bear it though, because your own clothes will get dirty.
* Personal Hygiene items (LIP BALM, shampoo, toothbrush and paste, makeup, deodorant, soap, shampoo and conditioner, unscented lotion, your own pads, etc.) Depends are a lifesaver.
* Number of La Leche League or other breastfeeding support
* Car Seat with instructions
* Going home outfit for mom (You will still be looking to be about 6 months pregnant after birth. Most women wear the clothes that they wore to the hospital, some bring nursing shirts.)
*Flip flops that dry quickly so you can wear them in the shower and walking around
*Baby nail clippers- often the baby is born with long nails, and the hospital doesn’t hand out clippers.
*diapers and wipes.
Some of these things are provided at the hospital, but I attended a friends birth where all they provided were scratchy thin towels to swaddle the baby, paper towel type diaper wipes, 4 pads for the mom (which didn't last long) baby diapers for only the first day (she had to stay for 2) vaseline for the baby's bum and a knitted hat. No clothes, diapers, wipes, clippers, nasal aspirator etc. I am sure that if she would have needed an aspirator they would have helped her out though.
