ROME - Catholic nuns and priests in Italy are following their flocks to the beach this summer, establishing an inflatable church and a beach-convent in the sands to lure sunbathers.

The 98 foot-long blow-up church — staffed by priests ready to take confession — will debut on Saturday on the Adriatic coast in the Molise region, an organizer said.

"There will be four or five people singing, with music about God," said Chiara Facci with Catholic group Sentinelli del Mattino. Night time activities, which will not include Mass, will run from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.

The first attempt to inaugurate the inflatable church last month on the holiday island of Sardinia failed after strong winds forced organizers to relocate, she said.

Big cities like Rome and Milan empty in August, when Italians head to the beach for summer holidays, leaving streets empty and many businesses closed. Churches are hardly immune, and also see their congregations thin.

On the Mediterranean coast, nuns from a convent near the southern Italian city of Naples have relocated to beach cabins to join holidaymakers saying the rosary. An adjoining altar was set up under two tents.

"The concept of a beach-convent is something that is appreciated by vacationers and the nuns themselves," priest Antonio Rungi, who helped spearheaded the initiative, told Italian news agency ANSA.

Okay. Not sure what to think about that.

and since they mention this, I have to ask, was there any other option prior?

Okay, am I missing something here? What exactly is corncerning those who aren't sure what to think? Is it simply because this is the Catholic church? Or are there other reasons?

Didn't Jesus go to where He was needed? Didn't He meet people where they were? He didn't wait in a big fancy church for people to come to Him...He went to them. Also didn't the disciples of Jesus also travel to where the people were? Isn't that what missionaries do--go to where they feel led to go to spread the Word?

I have roots in the Catholic church, too, and even though I have huge issues with much teachings and doctrine, I got a foundation that eventually led me to the Truth of Jesus Christ and I acctually accepted Him as my Lord and Savior and expreienced the Holy Spirit at a retreat sponsored through the church. I am not necessarily defending or promoting the Catholic church, don't get me wrong. I know how vehemently against them some of you are (whore of Babylon, I think someone on here once said...) but I guess I see a group of people who are recognizing that even while on vacation, their parishoners may have spiritual needs and they are tyring to provide easy access to them.

I don't think this has to necessarily be a Catholic-centric thread. The Anglicans could have used an inflatable church in England for that matter. The Baptists could use one on the Gulf Coast here. I also think it's ok to "not know what to think", to not like it, and to even think it's a good idea. :-D

I am really sorry if I came off abrasive...yes, it is okay to not know what to think, agree or disagree. I guess in my overbearing way I was just trying to understand why people thought what they did or didn't.

I think, besides being a little oddly worded and disagreement with Catholic church doctrine, that it's a good idea and might draw attention in a good way if done by a protestant church. If I was on the beach holidaying and non-Christian, I would check it out from pure curiosity and that might lead to thinking more about my position in life and possibly to making a decision about God in my life.
I like it when the church gets innovative and thinks outside the box.

You know what, Im not a massive fan of the Catholic Church, but sometimes nuns know what they are doing. I have a lot of respect for nuns. Ive known many who have given their lives to Christ and are utterly and completely devoted to God. I actually think this is an awesome idea. Why not?! God moves in mysterious ways, man, dont knock it! lol. As I was searching for God I was touched by some watchtower magazines, wouldnt touch them with a ten foot barge pole now but God can use ANYTHING to bring his own home. Beleive it!
