View Full Version : Non-irritating hand santizer for the diaper bag
BlessedMommy 09-21-2006, 11:05 AM Well, I put a bottle of regular hand santizer in my diaper bag. Just one problem: I have bad eczema on my hands and the alcohol in it really hurts and dries out my hands! Any suggestion for a hand cleansing idea on the go that doesn't have alcohol or other irritating ingredients in it?
How about alcohol-free baby wipes? I'm sure they don't kill bacteria like anti-bacterial cleanser, but I've read that a baby's urine is practically sterile, anyway. Not sure about the poop...
~Tara~ 09-21-2006, 12:32 PM ummm I'm thinking something with Tea Tree Oil ??
I'll have to look into that one, nothing coming to mind at the moment..no specific product to recommend.
mamallama 09-21-2006, 01:28 PM Yes, I do! I also have excema really bad on my hands - especially when the seasons change. I am using something I bought online here: www.skindecent.com. I really love that online shop. Everything is handmade so that automatically makes it better for you - no preservatives or harsh ingredients. Marliss (the owner) is super sweet and the best part is - she is having a sale this weekend. Check her out and tell her Becca sent you! :D
Robynn 09-21-2006, 04:17 PM I use an antibacterial lotion from Avon that contains Triclosan.
I have not seen it for sale here in Canada in awhile, but I bought about six last time they did sell it. I don't know of another product with it off the top of my head, but a lotion type with Triclosan or Microban would been much nicer on your skin.
Otherwise a lotion containing tea tree oil would be an altrnative.
Will check out that link, thanks!

We used stuff called AQUIM gel on our hands as we had the same problem with hand irritation due to frequent steralisation and washing needed for pre-terms (my hands were sooooo sore) it was called AQIUM gel - the package didn't look the same as the stuff I got way back (mine was in a bottle that looked like a see through soap on tap bottle) it's made by EGO pharm who I am really fond of as they make soap free shampoo and conditioner which is also FANTASTIC!
It's more like moisturiser than anything and it totally sterilises the hands (safe after nappy changes etc)
My sister has sensitive skin too and she says the Dermaveen range of anything is fantastic.
MommaBear 09-22-2006, 07:18 AM We use antibacterial hand lotion from Bath and Body Works (vanilla scent 'cause I love that smell). Comes in various scents. They are cheap and small enough to tos in a diaper bag (WooHoo!!!) Hope this helps! ~Kerri
Cristina 09-22-2006, 08:19 AM Maybe add a few drops of lavender essential oil to some lain water?

BBW's have alcohol in theirs, I believe.
MommaBear 09-23-2006, 07:13 AM Really? Our is the lotion kind 'cause my hands get so dry from the gel kind and will burn otherwise. I guess I never noticed since it never burned. ~Kerri
BBW does have 2 kinds, the lotion and the alcohol gel. Not sure if the lotion has alcohol or not, but I've used it and it was okay. I wasn't overly impressed. [whatthink] I usually just use my wipes solution to clean my hands, then dry them with a clean, dry wipe.
ChamomileFriend 09-25-2006, 06:29 PM Thanks for that link to skindescent.com, mamatotwo777 !
The eczema on my left hand is extra painful this year - I am wearing band-aids on my fingers to work every day bec the skin is just cracking and bleeding from reg handwashing. I will check out their hand sanitizer.
