I want to start potty training Ethan (he's 27 months). But i don't know if i should teach him to sit or stand, how did you moms do it? Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated! TIA

We teach sitting here. Way less mess. He stands at public urinals and outside but that's it. In houses, he sits. He's too careless to be allowed to stand and has had too many messes. So it will be sitting for both my boys. Dh does the same due to a back problem. I love it! LOL

I taught ds to sit for ease, as previously mentioned. But, now he prefers to stand...I'm ok with that and if he makes a mess, then he cleans it up and yes he's 3!

I don't know this for sure, but I think it's physically easier for men to stand, like the urine comes out 'better'...I'm not totally sure what I mean...but when I see dh and ds assume the position, it's exactly the same. And that wasn't taught.

Anyway, I clean the toilet every day, so it's not bad. But both dh and ds clean up after themselves.

I'm with cj. My DH sits (although not due to a back problem), and it's so much cleaner. DS will be sitting also when it's time (except in public places, on the side of road etc.) I don't want to be constantly wiping up spots in the bathroom. It's gross..... things are cleaner and smell better now that DH sits. I wanna keep it that way.

I haven't heard DH complain about pee not coming out as well. I suppose I could ask him if that's a problem. LOL

We taught Ethan to sit...once and awhile he stands now...but much cleaner and easier to point down and aim with...and some toilets are tall, so he can always reach them sitting...

My boys stand which yes makes a stinky mess. When they were first learning though they seemed to have a fear? of sitting - guess they thought they would fall in.

Same here (only because they weren't tall enough to stand). They sat backwards, straddling the toilet. As they got taller, they stood.

Mine stand, just like daddy. Aiden always preferred it and Willie did sit for a while, but now when he goes, it's most likely standing. Bobert refuses to sit, but I wish he did. We got him a Peter Potty - mini urinal because he pees almost straight up. And being trained at 2, he's still pretty short, so the urinal has worked out awesomely for him.

All 4 of my boys standing, and sitting came later if they felt like it or were doing #2. I just found it so easy to train them that way because it was exciting for them to pee on bugs, flowers, ant hills, outside. Training them was fairly easy, by 3 all were trained.

My 4 year old still sits to pee. He is showing interest in standing though - he thinks that there is some magic trick to it (lol). I am keen for dh to teach him to do it standing before he goes to school. But dh thinks that ds is still a little young at the moment and would make too much of a mess (I don't think that he is too keen on demonstating the skill either).

Thanks ladies! :) After seeing all the responses, I think we'll try sitting and see how that goes. ;) Thanks again!

I can't believe all these sitters!!! Timmy always overshoots if he sits, but then sometimes he misses when he stands too, I guess he's messy either way.. I do try to get him to aim better though. If you throw a cheerio or something in the potty they might want to "shoot" for it.

Most of the time, my husband sits, too. He says it is earier than trying to "fish everything out" and put it back...plus, it is quicker[OK]
Matthew tends to stand, but he so tall for 4--3ft 7in, he doesa pretty good job.

You could try teaching him to hold it down so it goes in the toilet? When he's sitting I mean.

I second this...start with sitting..until their aim improves, and they grow a bit to actually see over the toliet they are aiming into. ;-)

And yes, standing is messy at times...it's all a learning process!
