View Full Version : So mad at ABC Kids & Target

09-20-2006, 12:56 AM
DH left for work pretty early yesterday and then the kids heard him leave, so they came into my bed and asked me to put ABC kids on (which is a tame educational network) - anyway... no sooner had we switched this on at 6.30am mind you - then three teenaged girls appear on screen during a British TV show standing outside a chemist saying "If you are not old enough to go in and ask for them, you're not old enough to do it"
(this sounded to me like they were discussing purchasing condoms)

I flicked the TV over, and then decided to turn back and see what would evolve, being shocked - the girls on the show looked no more than 14.

The girls then went to a party and were looking for "boys to snog"

One girl did and then exclaimed "I can't believe I snogged a 12 y/o"

I was so disgusted that they'd even put a show on this early in the morning, and even that they'd make a show featuring this content. Their age aim would be 10-12 and younger since ABC kids is not really suitable for teeangers (most of the content is preschool to pre-teen).
Aiming concepts of relationships between children - I mean, what are these people trying to push on our kids!

Anyway, then I hear later on in the day that Target is underfire for making a new range of Padded Bras for 6 years and upwards. Claiming "OH well, kids these days are just so much older"

Why on earth do people want little girls to put on bras let alone stuff them and wear them out in public? What is wrong with some people? Is this fired by paedophiles or something? Why would someone want to make a little girl appear to have breasts?

Are they sexual objects? Do we have to make them more desirable and for what reason?

I know this scripture is out of context but The Revelation speaks of the WHORE OF BABYLON and how she "encourages the children to commit sexual immorality" - is this what is happening?

I know some toys have just recently been banned in Australia from the Brats range because they looked like "hookers" - so hopefully they suceed in banning the stuffed bras and take that horrible TV show off air!

Why are these people TRYING to do this to our children and how can they possibly think they are right? Or even sleep at night?

I don;t know of any mother in her right mind who would go and buy her 6 y/o a padded bra to give her the appearance of having breasts.

Doesn't surprise me about Target. They are not my favorite of companies anyway. They wouldn't let the bell ringers on there property last Christmas, however they support charties that endourse homosexualtiy.

ABC family is not really "Family" anything anymore. Did you know they are owned by Disney?

wow.....that is very disturbing!!!!!kids already have to deal with peer pressure when their in school(jr. High and high school) which i think is very scary!!! Then to add to it with this show on tv

That disgusts me to think that they promote padded bras for KIDS!!! my daughter is 6 and isn't any where close to needing a bra and if she needed one i certainly wouldn't buy a padded one for her...what is wrong with these sick people..

I hate how everyone trys to make our kids grow up faster that they should!!

I wish they would ban bratts dolls here i don't like how trashy the look.

Saw the padded bras on CNN last week. Think you're right on about the Revelation verse. :(

That's shocking about the padded bras. Although I was horrified to see what was in the children's section at Sears when I worked there in college. Like shiny string bikini underwear.

This is off topic, but the whore of Revelation is the Catholic church. But, still, the application is there... pimping out our kids.

I haven't heard about the padded bras. That's just too much. I'm not real pleased with Targets choices for girls clothes however. I can never find anything that doesn't make my 6 yo look like she's 16. The clothes that are manufactured for children these days is just aweful. Especially the shoes. My 6 yo doesn't need to wear heels!

Well, as a former public school teacher I've actually seen some 2nd and 3rd grade girls (but not 6-yr-olds) who could have used a bra (can anyone say, "Too many hormones and steroids in the meat"?) But padded? Give me a break!

Not all the brat dolls are banned over here, the baby brat dolls wearing panties, leather jackets and trashy bling were banned.

IMO they encourage "plastic surgery" because they look like they've all had botox. Mind, you, a lot of people say Barbie is the root of all evil and I never felt that as a kid or now. She's a saint compared to what kids have foisted on them today (I do realise that other people don't think so and I totally respect those who hate Barbie).

The Target clothing is somewhat still okay here, there are a lot of nice dresses and stuff, jeans, decent clothing. DD is certainly not allowed to wear anything immodest that's for sure, not even a bikini.

Unbelievable! Kids are just growing up too fast as it is, much less us encouraging it! Can't they be kids for the short time they are kids?

Speaking as a girl who "bloomed" early...I was always embarrassed to have breasts  when the other girls didn't! I would wear a training bra then an undershirt then my regular shirt to try to hide them!

I can't imagine a mother wanting to accunuate a young girl's body like that! I'm thankful I have boys...I could not let my daughter dress like the kids dress now. I have been browsing through the girls sections in the stores for my neice and have just been appalled. It's hard to find anything that's conserative even for younger kids (4 and 5 y/o).

I don't especially like Target anyway. We don't have one near us, but I don't shop there if I can help it. I didn't appreciate the way they treated the Salvation Army last year!

Wow! ITA with you! That is ridiculous! That t.v. show is totally giving the wrong idea to kids and pre-teens! And Target making bras for little girls that young...is even more ridiculous. I'll say no more! :?

May I add, it's hard to find anything that's conservative for women, period! (Even the 2 nice maternity tops I bought I have to wear a tank top under, the necklines are so low. :x )

I don't allow television in our house, because I will find so many things I disagree with, and just don't want those things creeping into our home. I have had TV in the past, don't have it now, and never plan to bring it back.

I hate that Target is so anti-Christian in their values. They made a big stink over not saying "Merry Christmas" to their customers. I hate it because I love shopping there, but if I can take my money elsewhere I will.

To be fair, Target hasn't blipped the Salvation Army totally off of their radar:

Salvation Army

Target has a long-standing solicitation policy at our stores nationwide. In order to provide a distraction-free shopping environment for our guests, we do not allow solicitation or petitioning at our stores regardless of the cause being represented.

In January 2004 we informed The Salvation Army of our decision to consistently apply our solicitation policy. This policy does not diminish our support of The Salvation Army. In fact, Target and The Salvation Army recently announced a new partnership for an online Wish List designed to assist families in need. From November 25 through January 25, visitors to Target.com/salvationarmy can view and purchase clothing, household items, personal products, and Gift Cards to be donated to families across the country. Guests will also be able to link directly to The Salvation Army website to make a monetary contribution.

In addition, any non-profit organization, including The Salvation Army, can apply for a grant through its local Target store. Store grants form the basis of Target's extensive commitment to supporting the communities in which it does business, and many local Salvation Army corps across the country benefit from Target store grants. Here are a few examples of grants provided to local Salvation Army chapters in 2005:

Monroe, LA - Educational Services Organization
Passaic, NJ - Salvation Army Family Enrichment (SAFE)
Dallas, TX - Domestic Violence Prevention Program
Phoenix, AZ - Domestic Violence Shelter
Monterey Bay Peninsula, CA, - Building Confident Families

Target has one of the largest and most respected corporate philanthropy programs in America, donating more than $2 million per week and hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours each year to non-profit organizations across the country. Forbes magazine recently ranked Target as the "Most Charitable Company in America."

I can't believe the padded bras made for young girls, although it does not surprise me in the least. My dd is 12 and when I go shopping for her, I cannot believe the crap they have in stores!! Skin tight, low cut and trashy is the style unfortunately and I think dd sometimes thinks I'm being unfair when I won't let her wear certain things. She's not trying to dress sexy, she just wants to be "stylish" but she doesn't understand a lot of stylish stuff = trashy! In the juniors section, they have a bunch of shirts with sayings on them. One shirt we saw said "Tell your boyfriend to stop looking at me". That, among a lot of other shirts were just too inappropriate!! She didn't want that shirt...I just couldn't believe the stuff they sell. When my ds was in 3rd grade, there was a little girl in his class that had on a shirt that said "Sexy" big as day across the front of it. DD had a girl in her class that had on a shirt that said "Save a horse, ride a cowgirl". I can't believe the schools let these kids wear these shirts!!!

It makes me sick that the world portrays women as sex objects, but now they are doing the same thing to little girls. And what's worse is that some parents allow their children to buy/wear these things. I guarantee you they've made a killing off those padded bras.

I taught for Dallas ISD for 13 yrs (resigned in May to be SAHM), and could say several contentious things about it, but one thing for which I applaud them is making uniforms mandatory throughout the district (was it last year? Our school had already voted to do uniforms b4 it became district-wide). The older kids don't have a uniform per se, but a very strict dress code is enforced.

Maybe if more public school systems went this way, we'd see more appropriate kids' clothing in stores... :?:

AS a board member I can say that the goal of our board is to have at the least a very strict dress code to a loose uniform in place before school starts next year (currently we are discussing kakhis and polo shrits...one major rule will be that the waist of the pants has to be at the waist of the student...and the skirts will be knee lenght or longer)

My dd is big for her age, at 4 she is wearing size 7-8. Since we don't wear pants, I find that most all skirts in that size are far to short to be acceptable, and for the shirts, they fit her so tight in the chest and belly, yet hang so low in the neck (she is big, but not fat, but she is still shaped like a 4 year old, kwim, ).

Perhaps we should all learn how to sew and make our own.

The padded bra issue is shocking, reminds me of something I saw on another board about thongs geared towards preteen girls and younger!

Amen to everything before! I have an almost 3 year old little girl. It is really hard to find clothed anywhere that aren't too short, tight or show her tummy. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE MOTHERS!!!!!!!!!!! It is their responsibility to teach their daughters what is appropriate dress and behavior so that the girls don't get in trouble later on. When mothers dress their daughters like little Jezebels, they shouldn't act so shocked when those same daughters end up pregnant. I feel so bad for those little girls, because they really don't have a chance. :(

The problem I'm having with dresses in general (my daughters are allowed to wear pants, but I think dresses are so CUTE that that's what they end up with a lot of the time) is that they're made so short. My daughters are 5 months old an 2 years old, and I have to buy their dresses a size or two bigger to cover them up! Seriously, it's like clothing manufacturers are going out of their way to make dresses that are even with a little girls' rear ends. Audrey wears a size 24 months in jeans, but I have to put her in a 3T to get a dress that comes down to the top of her knees. It's pretty ridiculous. Makes me consider buying a sewing machine, even though I can't really sew, lol!

If you look at how parents dressed their little girls in the 40's, you will see a lot of fancy decorated diapers sticking out of frilly little dresses that practically stuck straight out they were so poofy. Back then it was so innocent and things in the world today just aren't in a state where mothers can get away with that. Most of the little girls at my church wear dresses that are a few sizes too big for them, with a little t-shirt underneath to fill in the arm gaps. This is how I will dress my girls! (If The Lord gives me any.) Lots of overall and jumper type dresses with shirts underneath. I have nothing against pants for play, but I prefer jumpers, dresses or skirts for church functions.
