View Full Version : hot flashes
kanaclark 09-13-2006, 11:49 AM Oh my goodness, these things are so bad I wish I was single, with no kids and could just walk around the house naked.
For about the past two months, I've been having horrific hot flashes, I mean so bad that in a sixty degree room, I'll start sweating like I'm in ninety degree humid heat. I keep forgetting to ask the doctor if it's normal, but i've assumed that since it's normal during menapause, and pregnancy is hormonal too, it's normal.
anyone know anything about this? I'm burning up here, LOL.
It's raining outside and about sixty three and I'm debating on going and standing in the rain for a few minutes just to cool off.
Crissyanna 09-13-2006, 01:27 PM My midwife said my hot flashes were normal (but then, this is the same woman who basically brushed off my severe constipation for three months and then when I decided to nearly double my fiber intake and told her about it, she told me to stop as it would make it worse. I told her I was trippling my water intake at the same time. Well, low and behold, my treatment worked. Her sample packs of the prenatals with stool softner in them did NOTHING for me  ).
I was hot like that earlier this week. If the price of electricity wasn't so high around here right now, I was going to turn the a/c on down to as low as it would go. I have nearly passed out while shopping at Wal-Mart a few times becuase I got hot. In fact, I nearly went out in my favorite cashier's line and it freaked her out horribly. As soon as she had the chance, she went and ratted me out to my husband.
My husband is the hot person in the family. Until this. We got down to the upper fifties last night (blessed relief!) and I had the dual window fans turned on high on intake in the bedroom and two oscilating fans on high pointed towards the bed. I have only kept the sheets on the bed all summer. My poor husband froze last night, I slept on top of the sheets. Woke up this morning and he was bundled up like a cocoon and his skin was cold and he was whining because he was cold. I was like, I'm comfy, I don't see what the problem is [rofl] . He was so cold, he asked me to please put the down comforter back on the bed today  . He told me I could sleep on top of it.
So, basically, hot flashes can be normal. I was told to take it easy, and not overheat myself. As if that was possible during the hottest summer in over 50 years over here. I took a lot of cold showers. And begged to please shave my head. My husband wouldn't let me do that one...
I know hot flashes are normal for some pregnant women, but thank God, I've so far been free of that symptom. Of course, I'm so naturally cold that I may not know a hot flash if it bit me in the nose. [rotfl] It might feel good to me.
BTW, Chrissyanna, I have to tell you that every time I see your signature, I think, "No, no, she's wrong. I am married to the most wonderful husband God ever created!"
Crissyanna 09-13-2006, 06:13 PM That's just what you think Em!
I used to be a cold person. That is until I got pregnant last January. One of the first symptoms of being preggo was the fact I would toss the down comforter off during the night onto my husband. Poor man would wake up sweating profusely and toss it back on me, just to have me toss it back onto him. Viscious cycle that was. The sad thing is, at that point we were living in a two bedroom apartment that didn't have central heat (the heating unit was in the living room and it was similar to what one finds in a hotel). Before this whole pregnancy thing, I was always cold. I loved summer. I was comfy in 90 degree heat. Now, 70 is too hot most of the time.
I just hope to get my cold little self back again. I miss needing to snuggle my husband's warm body at night.
I wonder whose thermostat Dainyah is inheriting. Shall be interesting, I'm sure.
irishmum2boys 09-13-2006, 07:21 PM I don't remember having them so much while pregnant but after I had the baby, I would wake up ina pool of sweat. I am now 8 months postpartum and I still get them from time to time in the night and esp. during AF.
Godzgirl 09-13-2006, 08:36 PM Hot flashes?! OH YEAH! Had them during afterwards and sometimes still get them during the time of the month. Although i think i got them more with my daughter( first pregnancy) than with my boy.
I hate that feeling and the majority of my pregnancy has been in winter (which was how we planned it for that reason  )but yeah I feel like this sweety hippo at times.
When DH has been home I have gotten him a few times lately to put the fan on for me but the weather is a lot warmer now because it's spring.
Last pregnancy I was carrying twins in the height of summer during the later stages of the preg - DH would come home from work to find me walking around in nothing but a pair of panties, I so could not stand it LOL
Oh and I used to come over like this when my period was due.
kanaclark 09-14-2006, 10:47 AM Vanessa, don't tell me that. I've felt this baby was a girl, even though the u/s said boy. I keep telling them it's a finger they saw, LOL. Our older two are boys and this pregnancy has been sooo different from either of them, and I just feel GIRL not boy. but in a few short days we shall see.
Aussie Mom, I know the feeling. If I wasn't surrounded by guys all the time, (the kids) I'd be strippin' down myself. I can get away with semi nude during the day since Bri is only eleven months, and usually walk around in a tshirt and panties, but must put on shorts or something when it's time for Gabe to get home.
Bekah 09-14-2006, 03:21 PM Normal!!! We always have three fans on in the bedroom at night or I can't sleep!!
And Walmart is HORRIBLE!!! I can't go shopping in there for very long.
After the babies are born though I get horrible night sweats...

Opps! Sorry.
kanaclark 09-14-2006, 07:20 PM oh that's ok. i wouldn't mind a girl anyway, LOL. and you know, us women are more trouble than the guys are
Ain't it normal to have those suspicions that the u/s is wrong?
DH has been saying it constantly "what if it's a boy really?" I just said "Well, it's easy to dye pink clothing to red clothing"
my obstetrician managed to actually miraculously get a look between bubs legs on Wednesday and even I saw the little vagina.
I saw it last time too, not quite sure what made me think she'd grow a penis between now and 19 weeks when I had my anatomy scan ROTF
(her bottom is always right up under my ribs and she happened to be moving around so - ahem, yeah get the picture right?)
My fan is my best friend! I even had the airconditioner pumping yesterday to "cool' the house down.
Anyone find they get extra hot when eating? Thats probably due to introdiucing hot foods to the body.
kanaclark 09-14-2006, 10:25 PM Eating makes me terribly hot, even if I eat cold stuff. I was having a hot flash the other day and got the icecream out and here I sit on the couch with hubby eating ice cream straight from the carton and pouring sweat worse than when I first got the ice cream out.
but, on another note, I've had no appetite so I just deal with the heat when I finally feel like eating something.
Kana - what is the deal with the loss of appetite later in pregnancy? I have had days like that, is it due to space restriction???
kanaclark 09-15-2006, 06:35 AM I guess so. I'm not 100% sure, though.
Crissyanna 09-15-2006, 07:38 AM I haven't been hungry either lately. In fact, last week, I hadn't gained any weight at my check. I was fine with that. All I have been wanting is lime flavored popsicles. I ate the last one last night :( . It is all I can do to not hop in the car right now and run and get some more. Better ones than the last time too. Those were not good. Oh well. However, driving has become a pain for me so I gave it up two weeks ago. Stinks being stuck at home, but it is better than trying to reach the steering wheel with the chair being far enough back to not get hit with the air bag if it goes off and still being able to reach the pedals. I'm short, ok?
And we have gotten down into the 50s at night the past two nights and I still have the window fans on high, one oscilating fan at the bed on high and am still sleeping on top of the covers. ARGH. I miss snuggling.
:o well after saying that about the food I ate a massive dinner
Mmm mmm to the popsicles!!! Last night I craved to eat a mouthful of pepper - of course I didn't LOL
Can you believe absolutely no BH or anything today?
