View Full Version : help with name spelling!
catringa 05-30-2008, 08:33 PM ok, just need some more input. Hubby and I have had our baby girl named for months now! But we forgot to discuss the spelling. so i need your help, but i need to give you background first.
How we name our kiddos. Meaning. God had so many names....with meanings. He changed Saul's name to Paul....names and meanings are important to God. So they are important to us. So, Hannah...means "God's favor". OK, so we have the name.
now, we need for it to go well with two languages. English and Spanish. and it needs to be two syllables. now most of our names (mine, hubby's, and DD and DS....have only four or five letters. so here is the dilema.:
Hannah with an 'h" on the end...makes it six...and a bit confusing in Spanish. (the h is not pronounced so why is it there? that would be a spanish tought) our daughter, is Sara.....without an "h". the spanish way. so it might make sense to do that with Hannah....or Hanna and we will always say "without an h"....and keep it constant for both.
but i have just had it in my brain with an h at the end...and never thought to discuss it. it seems to look more asthetically (sp?) pleasing WITH the H. but not all that important I suppose.
so ....any thoughts? opinions? Hubby is leaning towards without. i was leaning towards with the h. but i am very open. so i am just curious what you ladies think! :) just for fun! help me think outside the box and explore all pros and cons.
savedbygrace 05-30-2008, 08:44 PM First, I LOVE the name Hanna(h) Grace. One, because my middle name is Hannah:mrgreen: and two it sounds so beautiful together.
Now for the spelling. I always liked it witht the H because you can spell it forward and backwards. (silly i know, but growing up I thought it was cool) I also think it looks nicer with the H.
That all being said, I would leave it off. Your Sara does not have an H, and it would be easier for the spanish speaking people to understand. However, do they spell it Hana?
My niece's name is Hannah. She is half Bolivian and her father is a preacher of a spanish speaking church. Hannah with an H never really caused any problems.....
But to be consistent with the other's, I'd say leave it off.
irishmum2boys 05-30-2008, 08:45 PM Pretty name choice :) I have also seen it spelt Hana when I was in the cz republic. That way it would also fit with your Sara!
Sorry not much help here, I think either way is just fine!
catringa 05-30-2008, 09:04 PM thanks for your help!! good question...i had never thought about Hana. But I think it would be between Hannah and Hanna...... (we are having problems pronouncing the H at the beginning....b/c in spanish it is silent....but my thought: they will learn ;) )
good thoughts! keep 'em coming!!! (i do like the idea of being consistant)
I like Hana or Hannah
I don't like Hanna, it reminds me of Hanna Barbara. Okay well I'm weird, I know.
I like Sara, Emma, Ana,
of course one of my faves has 3 syllables so that won't work for you... Leilani ;)
ChamomileFriend 05-31-2008, 01:33 AM I like Hana or Hannah

Hanna reminds me of the old Hanna Barbera cartoons also. I do like Hana or Hannah :)
buttercup_97140 05-31-2008, 06:38 AM I have a friend who's daughters name is Hannah Grace also...and she's a cutie too, so that's a good name, in my opinion. :-)
I like all the spellings. Hanna reminds me of Henna, but that's cute too! haahaa!!
Blessings,
Amber
~Tara~ 05-31-2008, 09:07 AM I prefer Hannah.
But, I was also going to mention the Hana option to fit your case.
However, I really *REALLY* like Hannah, with 2 Ns and an H at the end ;)
I'm no help huh? :p
kanaclark 05-31-2008, 08:46 PM I'm one for the NO H. But, at the same time, the littles have matching middle names. They are Brian Keith and Patrick Heith. If I'm not telling someone that there isn't an e at the end of our last name, I'm telling them Heith is "with an I, not an A". It gets annoying, but we wanted their names to match. It's just a choice we had to make. But yeah, I prefer the no H, route.
another thought, if you're hispanic, it may be the best to leave it off for cultural sake, ya know. It may confuse her and other people, esp. if Spanish will be the primary language spoken/taught in the home. (does that make sense?)
catringa 05-31-2008, 10:46 PM oh this is so tough! :) now i know there are much important issues going on in the world right now...besides thinking of how to spell a name! so thanks everyone for your input! :)
I am not latin myself, but my husband is. We live in a spanish speaking country right now....right now....but the Lord may move us to the states some day. English and Spanish are spoken in the home....but since my native tongue is English....my kiddos seem to favor English just a tad. There is a lot of spanglish going on around here.
i appreciate everyone's thoughts!!! i asked hubby again today...and he said, "really it doesn't matter to me...you decide!" AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! if he REALLY liked it without the H....i would go with it...mainly b/c I found the name Hannah and presented it to him..and he liked it (he named our first...but i was in complete agreement).
so everyone's input is helpful.....to help me decide! :)
hsgreen 06-01-2008, 12:12 AM I have a cousin named Hannah Grace and I have always thought she has about the prettiest name ever. So good choice on Hannah. I love it with the "h" at the end. I am always in favor of common spellings. I hate having to spell my last name to people, so I wouldn't want my kid to have to spell his full name to people. But again that is just me, I am rather boring! :-D
