View Full Version : Nutramigen formula
Gracie 05-08-2008, 03:01 PM DS (4 months) has been on Soy Formula since he was born. He has been having diarrhea for about 2 weeks...so his Dr. put him on Nutramigen. I told him my DD and I have are severly lactose intolerant and he said theres no protien in it, and whatever is in it was broken down so much (pre-digested?) that his body wouldn't recognize it. At this point, I was willing to try anything. So it's been about 32 hours since he's been on it. He's still having frequent diarrhea all day, but sometimes its just a lighter color and sometimes it's dry. Does anyone know what color/consistancy poop is supposed to be when your on nutramigen? Is this formula even safe for someone with a potential intolerance to lactose. My DD and I cannot tolerate casien either...so I am just really concerned. I will probably call Dr. again today, or take him to another one.
shaynes08 05-08-2008, 04:24 PM My ds is on Enfamil Lactofree formula. My 1st son, who is 6 now, was also on Lactofree. Both of them had extreme gas and major blowout diapers on regular formula. I didn't even talk to my dr. about switching son #2 to lactofree. The symptoms were there and I just did it. Son #1 switched to 2% milk around 1 yo with no problems. The dr. said there is no nutrient value for lactose so switching to a formula without it is ok. He also said lactose intolerence is hereditary. Although my husband and I don't have I do think I have lactose sensitivity. Ice cream is delicious but makes my stomach hurt awful. If you feel deep down he has lactose issues I would go ahead and try lactofree formula. We tried the cheaper store brands but they are not as refined as enfamil and he was spitting up chunks of the stuff. I hope this helps. Let us know what you decide :-)

Gracie 05-08-2008, 04:40 PM thanks Stacie, just 2 tidbits to add...Nutramigen is lactose free... it just has casien in it, which does come from milk but apparently is diff than the milk sugar ppl who are lactose intolerant cannot breakdown. We still cannot properly digest casien, even in trivial amounts though. DD and I cannot tolerate milk in any form. Most ppl would probably head to the ER if they had the kind of reaction we had to products containing even small percentages of milk.
DS was fine on soy formula....hes been on it since he was born. He was occasionally constipated but never had diarrhea for this long. It could be a stomach virus, but he hasn't been vommiting at all...so idk :???: prayers would be deeply appreciated. [praying]
shaynes08 05-09-2008, 12:34 AM Thanks for the info. I really haven't looked at other formulas to see what's in them. Usually by the time I get to that aisle in the grocery store I am ready to go home ;-) I had this thought as I was reading does it look like he might be teething? Prayers are being sent up for this little one. I know its hard when their sick and so little!
Gracie 05-09-2008, 01:34 AM you know, he really could be teething. I don't really see or feel any teeth though...thats what my MIL suggested too. Doc called me back and said since diarrhea hasnt stopped w/ new formula, to put him back on soy formula.
Thank you so much for praying!!! :)
Godzgirl 05-09-2008, 02:35 AM Will be praying your ds starts feeling better soon! [loveyou]
kanaclark 05-11-2008, 10:34 AM nutramigen has neither casein or whey in it. It's not milk or soy.
typically, their BM's would be similar to breast fed babies, as it's so simple for them to digest.
shaynes08 05-14-2008, 05:44 PM I just wanted to check in and see how your little one is doing now. Hope all is better :-)

breezykc2 05-14-2008, 07:30 PM My son used Nutramigen formula and then went on to soy milk....it has NOTHING in it! LOL...costs an arm and a leg though!
BM's truly change from child to child...my little guy on it only had one BM a day, normal to a little firmer....and on soy does the same thing....so it's all in the kiddo, some just don't go after every feeding or several times a day...(my first little man did that normal pattern, so the second was a change!)
He bleeds if he has proteins in cows milk and the nutramigen stopped it...within 48 hours all symptoms stopped and he was fine...sometimes diarrhea is slow stopping since their little system is out of whack from the other stuff....
Good luck!
kanaclark 05-15-2008, 01:35 PM ditto what Breezy said. I guess it would differ from child to child, I guess I assumed that since all of ours reacted the same way that it was the same with all kids, LOL.
But yeah, the diahrea may take a few days to clear up. How is the babe now?
Gracie 05-20-2008, 09:38 PM He is doing so much better now. Thank you guys for your prayers! :) [loveyou] ... about the casien, I read the label for Nutramigen and it is in there at about 14%... but anyway, he is still doing fine on soy!!
