I had over supply with ds and I am thinking that it is starting with dd. She nurses for five minutes and then pulls off to burp. She goes on for maybe another 5 and that's it! I nurse her every 2 hours during the day and every 5-6 at night. She is pooing and peeing up a storm and gaining weight. Hmmm...so I guess everything is ok! So my question is do you nurse on demand even if it's every 2 hours because they are rooting or do you hold them off? I am not a big believer in holding off but I want to make sure dd gets the hind milk. Any suggestions?

Yep. I have always nursed on demand which has meant every 1.5 - 2 hr from the start up til nearly a year. :)
I don't believe in holding 'em off either.
If you're worried about her getting hind milk, start her on that side the next feeding.
I never worried/paid much attention to what side when with mine. If one was a lazy nurser for a session..was 'on' there for a while, but not that actively nursing..I would put them to that side again next feeding. They may go to 'side a' for 3 'sessions' before going to the other. Just because they weren't nursing THAT intensely, kwim? That last part probably came out much more confusing than I was hoping for LOL Sorry.
Simply put..yes, I'd still feed on demand. Just do what feels right in regards to that and 'sides'.
I agree. I'm in the breastfed on demand camp. Micah has always been an every 2 hour feeder. It's completely normal. And I'd say you've got a good one there if she's going 5-6hrs at night between feeds. Micah used to be 1-2hrs during the night. He's alot better now but those first few months were a doosy.

Mine all fed that often also. I had oversupply with Gabriella and I still fed on demand. I think it helped me a lot by going back to the same breast for consecutive feedings in a certain time frame. I think I started out feeding her for 4 hrs on the same breast then switching.. meaning if she only ate for 5 minutes then wanted to eat again an hour or two later I would put her back on the same side and continue doing so for 4 hrs. I was able to taper off that by lessening the time frame gradually. Like I did the 4 hr on each side for a couple days then brought it down to 3 hrs, then 2 ect. My oversupply issues resolved after the first few weeks if I remember correctly?
Thanks Ashlee, that's great advice. So it's normal if the baby wants to eat for only 5 minutes at a time every hour or so...good to know!
