View Full Version : Okay, how do you do it?
myjoyoverflows 04-24-2008, 11:18 PM How do you deal with morning sickness with a toddler needing you constantly, while working 40+ hours a week...at odd hours of the day....??? I'm completely exhausted...like, more literally than I ever thought possible. It was so much easier to deal with when I was pregnant with Maddy...but that's probably because I slept whenever I felt I needed it and there was no little one begging for my attention. *sigh* I just wish that I could feel rested for once...and that this awful sick feeling would subside...sorry for the rant...just wanted to throw that out there...[whatwacko]
I'm not sure that I could be much help, but I wanted to say Congrats!!!
~Tara~ 04-25-2008, 07:16 AM Yes, congratulations! :)
And, um, sorry, I don't know how you do it. I have managed varying degrees of morning sickness and fatigue with varying numbers of other children needing me...but never ALSO with the added weight of a job outside the home. So sorry sweetie. I know that adds a whole new dimension.
rachel 04-25-2008, 08:27 AM Ah!! When are you due?
Here a couple tips from the net (americanpregnancy.org) that you might be able to use at work...
Sniff lemons or ginger or drink lemonade to relieve nausea (Would they let you keep a bottle of lemonade?)
Eat salty potato chips (I guess that'd be when you're out of sight of customers?)
Hope it subsides for you soon!
Also adding my congratulations! :) I have never had the full time job to deal with either, so I have *NO* clue how you're doing it! I was so sick this pregnancy, I could barely stand up, much less get dressed and go deal with other PEOPLE all day. Whew. That makes my head spin just thinking about it. When *are* you due?! :D
luvmy4sons 04-25-2008, 09:29 AM I can SO relate and I am so sorry. I worked 3- 12 hour night shifts a week all through the pregnancy and birth of all four of my sons in a six year span. I was chronically tired, and the early parts of pregnancy when I was extra tired and nauseous and working night shift were so hard. I look back now and don't know how I did it, but God was sufficient. I have looked through old prayer journals and I was continually crying out to Him to help me because I was so tired and overwhelmed and at the end of myself. Wish I had specific helpful hints. I would say lots of prayer, give yourself a break on housework, sleep when your toddler sleeps if you can at all, and did I say lots and lots of prayer?! Love and hugs! :-D
PianoMama 04-25-2008, 11:32 AM Congrats, Chelsie!! I can totally relate! I had M/S through my 17th week with my 2nd pregnancy, had a 2 yo and worked about 35 hours each week. I can honestly say that I couldn't have gotten through it alone. God was totally my strength. I really learned to talk to Him before calling my mom or my dh. Resting (mentally, not physically!) in Him was what I had to do. I couldn't have coped without doing that.
Along with that, I really didn't eat a lot. I kept myself hydrated so as not to bring on a sick feeling even more so...but I had minimally until dinner, then I was ok. How many weeks are you now?
Hope you start feeling better soon.

Godzgirl 04-25-2008, 12:05 PM Hey Chels! :-D Congratulations hun, so exciting! I hope you feel better soon! [loveyou]
myjoyoverflows 04-25-2008, 06:06 PM Ah!! When are you due?

Yes, I could have lemonade at work...and we serve iced tea, so there are constantly freshly cut lemons to be smelled! :P My doctor told me to eat something full of carbs early in the morning. I go in to work at 4:00am and I usually get my break around 9ish...but I feel the need to eat long before then....so working has been tough with the nausea...but also with the constant hunger that I feel. I never, EVER felt hungry before I got pregnant...but I'm hungry every couple hours now...but nothing I eat seems to settle well...and only bland foods are even sort of appealing. *sigh*
Oh, and I'm due about the 9th of December...I wasn't keeping very good track of my cycle this time around...wasn't really expecting anything to happen...so that day could be off a bit. I have my first ultrasound on the 5th of May..hopefully that will help to figure it out a bit more!
Thanks for all your congrats and advice...I'm trying the best I can to hang in there...sleep when I can...and take each day as it comes...it's been a rough few weeks....but I'll take it! :D
justmeNmine 04-25-2008, 07:29 PM Firstly, congrats!! I had a similar work schedule with my first pregnancy, but didn't also have a child yet... I tried to keep up with my nutrition at work, and rest when I could. I will caution that "they" believe my rigorous and physical work schedule is what caused pre-term labor/delivery at 35 weeks. Not too, too early, but not great either. Is Bill working again? Is there any chance he could help with Maddy's demands? With my second pg, I was no longer employed outside the home, so I opened my own in home child care business. I did well with that, but stopped about a month before I was nearing full term. It IS hard and I think seeking God can help to a degree but logistics are sometimes just what they are... and that is HARD!!
mamallama 04-25-2008, 10:30 PM No advice here...but I wanted to offer a big [hug] and congratulations!! [lovewuvu] I know you were wanting another baby so I am so happy for you!
ChamomileFriend 04-25-2008, 11:47 PM Lots of ginger helped some with my morning sickness - raw ginger boiled to make tea or candies made with real ginger. Some nights I would put on a kiddy video for my toddler and rest on the couch when I got home - dh has always been so wonderful about giving me time to rest, especially when I am pg. Alex would snuggle on me and still got some mommy time before bed in the evening and I also got to put up my swollen feet.
It is really hard, my 2nd pg was so much more difficult than my first bec I just couldn't rest when I needed to. I leaned on God soooooo much and I never would have made it without him! [crossheld] Praying for you and sending hugs [hug]
irishmum2boys 04-26-2008, 01:32 AM Oh that is very exciting, congratulations on your pregnancy. I pray for a healthy pregnancy and also for you as you balance work, home etc.
savedbygrace 04-26-2008, 12:20 PM Welcome to the preggy group!!!
Try eating small portions of protein. It will keep you fuller longer which will help with the nausea.
Will your dd take a nap with you? Maybe if you read her a book in bed and then ask her to snuggle you and take a nap?
I guess I'm blessed in that area. Abby will take a nap with me almost any time. (i think she is making up for when she was born up to 1.5 )

Ditto the protein advice. That is what made the difference for me this time round.
I also would put a gate up in the kids room (or whatever room works) and lie down on ds bed to grab a few winks during the day while they played.
Congrats on your pregnancy!
Katielady 04-26-2008, 02:50 PM Congrats! I am so glad I'm able to be back on here again to see all these babies coming!!!! Woohoo!!!
Love you Chels! Praying for you guys as always!
cabingirl 04-26-2008, 04:23 PM Congrats!! Sorry I can't relate in the working outside the home part... I'm sure it must be exhausting.... I'll keep you in my prayers...
Something I started this preg was drinking Propel vitamin enhanced water. (like gatorade) It really helped to 'perk' me up when I was so low on vits/electrolytes because of the n/v. I also must eat every 1-2 hours or I start fading. Ditto on the high protein snacks... cheese is a good one for me. or raisins...
