I posted a couple of weeks ago about ds and night terrors. I started journaling when the happen and I have really started paying attention to things that I thought were normal. He has very sensitive skin and I took him to the dermatologist. She said that he has keratosis polaris which is inherited (it looks like dry little bumps on arms, legs and cheeks) and there is nothing to do but use Eucerin lotion. She said it will get better as he gets older and it doesn't bother him at all, thankfully. Lately, it seems to be getting worse. When I started solids (which looking back was too early) he never had had diaper rash at all. As I started more foods he began to battle with diaper rash and yeast infections. Now he has at least 3 very loose stools a day, sometimes as many as six!!! Many days he cries after he goes because it hurts the diaper rash. I switched to cloth and cloth wipes about 10 months ago and only use warm water to wipe his bum. So after all of that, I am wondering if maybe he does have an allergy. I know that some of you suggested a milk/dairy allergy. Could all of these things be signs of that? Maybe I should cut dairy and switch to rice milk? What about eggs?
I felt so bad for him tonight! He loves his bath and couldn't even sit in the luke warm water because his rear hurt. He cried through the diaper change and pretty much up until I layed him down for bed. I have let him sleep diaperless and that's not so fun...I try to let him air out for a few minutes before putting a new diaper on him and I change him very frequently when he has urine and right away with poo.
Any suggestions????

I would consider a lactose allergy/intolerance and at least try out making a switch to soy or rice to see if it would help. Some are also allergic to soy though. What about cheese? I also know some who are intolerant not really to lactose but to casein (sp?).
For the sore bottom I've never found anything better than "Flander's". It looks likes light brown mud, but works wonders and I've tried everything through the years with our 4. It's made in SC and my Walmart hides it behind the pharmacy counter but it's worth asking for.
check with doc about using triple antibiotic or an anti fungal to help with little bum. Also, try an oatmeal bath (aveno puts one out). Eggs could totally be a problem- em always get green poops with eggs. Check about spices too- like some applesause or other baby foods have cinnimon in them which can be problem matic. Do some research about rice and soy milks before using them, there are some indications that you might want to know before using them (I know some about soy not sure about rice just, throwing that out there). -ren

I would definitely encourage you to do a trial milk elimination and see if that helps his symptoms clear up. All the nutrients that are in milk can be got just as well (and perhaps better) in other less allergenic sources.
You can buy calcium fortified rice milk in the refrigerated section at Wal-Mart. Commercially done almond milk is also a great option. Very Vanilla Silk soymilk is a favorite at my house! So tasty and sweet! We also love soy yogurt, soy cheese, soy ice cream, rice ice cream, and many other great non-dairy alternatives.
I have a low grade milk allergy and we also have personal health beliefs that have steered us away from milk and egg products so we are now a vegan family, other than occasional trace amounts of dairy/egg in processed foods.
If you have any questions about non-dairy nutrition, feel free to ask here or PM me. Prayers for you!

Oh, just a couple more things...
It is true that soy should be used with caution. I try to branch out and try other things when possible, because soy is used in SO many vegetarian products and there seem to be some cautions about it, from what I've read. Caution also applies to dairy use as well. I posted a couple of links in Kim's thread, if you want to read up on the studies done on the effects of milk.
Also, hemp milk is the most nutritious non-dairy milk that I know of. It has 46% of the RDA of calcium per serving and has Omega 3's and 6's in it. You can even get it in chocolate flavor! Your health food store should carry it... Hope this helps!

You've gotten good advice. I just wanted to offer hugs to you & your son. I know it's hard on him , but also hard on you seeing him go thru this & trying to figure it all out! I agree with eliminating dairy - you need to do it for at least 30 days -even though some people will tell you 2 weeks. :-)
Thanks! Actually, it has only been two days and today I already noticed a difference! Is that crazy or what? He only had one bowel movement and it was much firmer and he didnt' seem as fussy...maybe we are on to something!

my ds gets horrible bum rashes and the only thing that helps is to mix (white) flour and cornstarch and "cook" them until golden brown. Use the mixture on his bum. I found the creams were to nasty too get off even using squirt bottle and cloth wipes.
