sis_n_bubsmommy 04-08-2008, 10:14 AM that head lice was found in dd's class. They state to check head for 14 days and all that jazz to make sure she doesn't get it. I looked in the stores and seen the products to treat it if she gets it-but I want to know how to prevent it. We went through the whole thing of not sharing coats, hats, scarves, etc-but is there a product out there that will prevent it or home remedies to prevent?
Thank you :)
breezykc2 04-08-2008, 01:42 PM Wash bedding/blankets/coats/jackets/clothes/hats/carseat cover/pony tail holders really well and DRY them...the heat helps kill for sure!
You can go ahead and put the mayo mix in the hair that would help kill off anything if was there early!
Dunk combs/brushes in alcohol and then freeze for 48 hours
Go ahead and vaccum furniture and carpet in house and in the car if ya want....have her change in the garage for a few days from her school clothes and brush her hair out well in the garage too....
Spray or wash book bag and use a paper lunch sack to keep that clean and leave backpack itself in garage for awhile........just bring in the books/papers.
Good luck!
rocking baby 04-08-2008, 01:48 PM I've read but havent tried tea tree oil for lice..Its said that they dont like the smell of it (it has a semi strong scent) so I think that could be used as a prevention treatment..I use the stuff on my dd's cradle cap (putting 10 drops of oil in a shampoo).. you can look up the exact amount of oil ur supposed to put in the shampoo for the lice on yahoo... i cant remember off the top of my head..

What's the mayo mix?
LaDonna 04-08-2008, 04:57 PM Tea tree oil does work
mayo mix...not sure of it as a mix but I helped a friend through a lice investation....and all you do is apply mayo to your hair and cover with a shower cap or towel...and let sit...then rinse and shampoo.
just make sure you wash everything in hot water and clean all brushes and vaccum.
Praying that you don't have any problems at home.
when I was working as a hairdresser I had a few kids come in with it and of course you can't cut it but I would itch for hours......I also NEVER got lice as a child and the one time I did get it was while working as a hairdresser....my head had been itching but didn't think anything of it but let one of the girls check it to make sure and she found maybe 1 or 2 nits....went and treated it right then and no more problems.
Cheryl 04-08-2008, 05:27 PM OH man, we went through this a little over a year ago (the notice went home on theh last day of school just days before Christmas. Lovely.) I scratched my head for weeks after getting that notice, lol. And asked the same question you did - why isn't there a preventative for making the lice NOT want to get on your kid?!
I did as others suggested - washed all the bedding and coats, and checked my kids' heads for a couple weeks after.....actually it ended up being almost a month because shortly after returning to school from Christmas break, another lice notice was sent home. Fortunately that was the last one. I grilled my son about who was there and who was absent - was anyone missing from his table, lol.
Just so you know, lice don't jump from one host to another......it's got to be through a shared garment, comb, bedding, touching heads, etc.
We can get preventative sprays here too, that usually have either one of or a mix of tea tree oil, lavender oil, and sandalwood oil. Apparently not washing your child's hair will discourage nits too - they like clean hair, from what I've heard, lol. Praying your family won't be affected by the outbreak!
I had to laugh - I just got back from picking our boys up from school, and guess what? They both have "nit notes" advising the teacher suspects someone in the class has nits. I've checked them, and they both seem clear, thank goodness!

Does any kind of mayo work or just name brand-does it have to be pure mayo or Miracle Whip? How long do you leave it on and does it leave hair greasy after you shampoo it out?
I've been washing clothes and bed clothes like crazy-her jackets\coats-everything but thought I would do the mayo treatment too just to help.

I hope your little ones don't get it either! It seems to be running pretty rampant through my kids school and also the neighboring school too. :(
LaDonna 04-11-2008, 01:38 AM When I was helping my friends dd try and get rid of it we used whatever mayo they had. As long as you shampoo really well it should not leave a greasy residue. Mayo is a good conditioner for hair anyhow. I think with the friends dd they left it in about 45- hr.
LaDonna 04-11-2008, 01:43 AM Also here is something else that I have heard many ppl try and it worked but it is very messy......maybe a weekend treatment.
Baby oil.
You rub baby oil in the hair and let sit for about 10-20 min and then comb through really well and then you are going to have to shampoo like crazy to get it all out. The oil will slide off any nits hanging on.
Also if you find a nit.....take your finger nails and pull it off , if it comes off easily the nit is dead but if it hangs on well it is alive.
Lice does move and jump, not sure about from person to person but on an individual who has the lice, yes it can move and sometimes the lice bug itself can be rather large, this is usually something that occurs in a situation where no treatment has been attempted however. I went to cut a little boys hair one time and kind of suspected he had lice just because of the way the mother was acting and I spotted it at the back of his neck and yes it was moving. I pointed it out to her and she told me it was sand since he had been playing in the sand box, I told her uh ma'am sand doesnt jump.......ok now I itch
