On Wed. when we picked Sam up from my in-laws she had hives. My MIL thought it may be Chicken pox or the measles, but I thought they were to big to be either. She also said that Sam hadn't eaten much that day. My MIL also said they hadn't been outside that day either. When we got home, we put Calamine Lotion on her & by the next day she looked alot better.
That past Sunday she was in the nursery at the church we visited & she had a set of shots about 2 weeks ago and the doc said that she could have symptoms 7-10 days out. I read up on the shots and two of them said that hives could be a reaction, but would happen minutes to hours after the shots were given, not days. :?:
The next day she came to work with us and we noticed she had this terrible cough, sounded really flemy and alot like my BIL when he has allergies really bad.
Since all of that, both me and my DH have gotten sore throats & the sniffles. The hives on Sam have been gone since Friday, which the DH and I never got. :?:
You think she's got allergies? or some sort of flu? It's always so hard to tell if she's got a sore throat or something b/c she never cries or anything, you can only tell because she is less active and clingy.

When in doubt call pediatrician I always say. That is what they are there for. It is better than driving yourself crazy trying to figure it out. Sometimes they do have a question or two that would shed light on the situation. I have been dealing with hives as well with my oldest son... frustrating...and I do know that a cough is common after one of the vaccinations about 2 weeks out. Keep us posted. Praying.

how old is your daughter? When my son got his 1 year measles/mumps/chicken pox shots he got a rash 10 days out that lasted about 4 days....he got the measles rash and a friend had her daughter get the chicken pox rash for the same thing...but all were fine after and no problems immediatly after the shot....Doc said it is completely normal with this shot and most kids get a reaction like this.....not sure if these were the shots she had or not though.

Our 'wonderful' doctor's office still hasn't called us back yet. We called Thurs, Fri & this morning :x
Sam is 19-months, she saw a new doctor the last time she went b/c the doctor's office we went to always gives us a resident doctor and I'm sorry, but I wanted a real doctor!! Not to mention they told us to bring Sam back at 18 months, and it was actually supposed to be 15 months :x And now the new doctor's office won't return our calls  (making lighth of our problem)!
Is there like a Telehealth thing you can call? Or the hospital?
If your doctor cannot even return your call after phoning three times then I would just give up on them and when you've sorted this out... phone them back and make a complaint.

Growing up, my sister would always get a case of hives whenever she got a cold. At first they thought she was allergic to strawberries, detergents, soaps, anything else you can think of. Then, mom noticed the pattern that when she got a cold, she would come down with hives. She did eventually grow out of that. Now, she just gets hives if she eats raspberries, uses things with certain dyes and a few other oddities.
While the side effects of the shots said hives with-in such and such a time, it still could have been that. Everyone's body reacts differently to the same substances. For instance, if I am exposed to any quantity of mold, I get a horrible sinus infection and end up on antibiotics for it. My husband only gets a headache from it (varying degrees of allergies to it). Touching acetone will break me out horribly in a hive-like rash, it dries my mom's skin out like horribly eczema. We are all different. But then, it sure would be boring if we were all the same, righ?

Not that I know of, but I'll look into that. I'm slow to anger and right now I'm there! :x I just put in another call and they are out to lunch! The next time I call I'm gonna tell the sec. as nicely as I can that I will hold until someone comes to the phone, this is getting a little ridicilous!

Thanks for the info hun! We are completely lost right now trying to figure it out. But I did wonder if the hives came with the cold she has, that gives me another question to ask her doc! Thanks again Crissy!

Our daughter had hives when she was younger-about 1yr old or so. We never did pinpoint what caused them. Our doctor said she was too young to be tested for allergies. They thought it was from strawberries but ended up not being that. Hives are sooooo hard to determine where they came from. I hope you can find out the reason soon. We keep Benedryl around our home just b/c she still gets them every once in a while.
Have you managed to get hold of your doctor yet?

Yes, finally got a hold of someone! The nurse said she'd been leaving messages for me to call her back, but there were no messages from any doctor's office on our cell, home or work telephone :?:
The nurse said that the hives are not from the shots. The shots were given on 7/24, that was wayyyy further back than we thought. She said it could be laundry detergent, bathing soap or a fabric that is in my PIL's house. So Craig's gonna call and talk to my MIL to ask her a bunch of questions and try to figure out what could have given her the hives. I was glad to hear that it wasn't because of the shots!
So off we go to find out what is not agreeing with our little pumpkin-head! Thanks for all the great advice ladies!
I hope you figure it out. How is she now? Have all the hives disappeared?

my 6 1/2 month old has also been fighting hives for about a month now. his ped told me it was a reaction to a cold virus the he had and that it could last as long as 3 weeks. right after he was sick we all got sick too, dh, me and our other 4 yo ds and my 12 yo dd. none of us got the hives either, just the sore throat and cold symptoms.
then just when i thought the hives were all gone he got his booster shots and they are back. he just gets a few every day, mostly on his legs. if it's bad enough in the evening I give him benadryl so he can sleep, but i hate doing that. it's also very frustrating because i'm starting him on food and i can't really tell if he's allergic to anything... so far nothing seems to make the hives worse or better, he just keeps getting a few every day. and then on top of all that the poor thing came down with thrush today. [whatsmack]
i hope Sam gets over the hives soon, but if there isn't an obvious cause it sounds like you described what my ped said with the hives being caused by the cold virus.

We're still working on trying to figure out what it could have been. I notice that they sometimes don't watch where she is going and what she's doing.
The other day, my MIL left Sam outside in the backyard and went to put something inside the house and when she came back, Sam was in the front yard. Sam unlatched the barely standing gate and walked out by herself. Boyyyyy, I was mad  when they told me that. What if she touched something like poison ivy (they've got over an acre of property), she could have gotten into anything or ran into a snake!
Soulmom, I thought about that when Crissyanna said her sister had them. It's very possible that could have been what it was. In the meantime we told my MIL to take note of things that she comes into contact with. Hopefully we'll get to the bottom of this soon!
I would be mad too. :x I hope that doesn't happen again.
When we still had contact with my MIL she used to take Abby outside to see their dog. I used to go with her every time because I just didn't trust her or the dog. And she told me that there was deadly nightshade in her garden and to keep Abby away from it. I couldn't figure out why she just didn't get rid of the stuff. It's not like it was a pretty plant. :?

Oh my my my, mother in laws. Some folks are blessed with really great ones, and well, let's just say I have some similar feelings about my own. She wasn't exactly a nice caretaker anytime she would baby sit Kassi either. The last time she kept her was over 3 years ago. My baby was barely 2 years old, and when I got back home the woman was asleep on the couch with the door unlocked. It was God almighty that kept my mouth shut that day. But, that's why she hasn't kept her since then.
As for hives, I get them about once a year, usually stress related, and I end up in the hospital getting shots. Usually I'm fine by the next day. If your daughter is old enough, keep some kid's benadryl around the house and that usually clears up a mild case of it.
