View Full Version : Did you prepare your kids for B/F

08-20-2006, 11:07 PM
Just wanting to know did any other mothers attempt to pre-pare your children for breastfeeding when your new baby was coming?

I just feel it's something I need to explain a little because they are going to see it.

I tried to use the opportunity to explain when they asked me where milk comes from (as in in the fridge), I said cows and how all Mummy animals have milk and the baby animals drink it. They would not believe me that milk comes from "cows boobies" and when i told them "This is how Mummy's feed babies" they just stared at me.

I showed them a discreet picture of b/f and I said "This is how Mummies feed babies" They said nothing which is unusual for them LOL

All they remember from milk is drinking it in a bottle, or now from a glass.

I am so lucky with the birth thing because I have seen mothers reactions when their young children say "How does the baby come out" ROTF.
I have heard some because of the age say "they push it out" or "the doctor gets it out"... I have to have a c-section, so I get to say "through a hole in my tummy" ROTF!

I had a little chat with my ds who was 3 1/2 when I had dd and told him that mommy's breasts have milk in them and that when he was a baby that's how he got milk. He never questioned it or anything except when I got a breast infection (actually did that twice!) and would cry because my nipples hurt so badly. He worried about me then because I was hurting  .

Good night!

I told them that my breastfeeding was God's way of providing bottles for the baby  . They seemed to grasp that pretty easily since they had seen babies drink from bottles.

I got a lot of questions and then cute little comments and lots of observation. I even had one who was under 2 try to nurse again. After awhile though it was boring and not that interesting to them!

I was wondering the same thing when i was pregnant with baby #2. I figured that if my daughter seemed to mention something or look at me as if she was wondering what i was doing then i would explain. But she never did so i didn't have to. She just saw it as part of taking care of the baby.

Gee, ya know, I dont know that I ever said anything to mine. Mine have all been breastfed for over a year. A difference of 2 years between all kids. I just birthed a kid and nursed. The elder never said anything about it. I just had the kids 'mimicing' (that looks wrong sp?) me..yep..3 yr old boy walking around with a bear 'nursing' LOL We corrected him, just told him it's what mommies do, not daddies LOL Still funny when we think about it.

Whenever the baby needed to nurse I would go pick them up and say something like 'baby's hungry, he needs to eat' or 'time to nurse the baby' so they made the connection. But I don't think ever really questioned anything.

Then by the time you get to 3 with that same spacing..I guess they don't think anything of it, no need to ask questions. *shrug*
It's just commonplace...as mentioned previously...part of taking care of the baby.

I'd say, play it by ear. Just go about your 'business' and if/'when asked, answer simply. "Mommy's nursing the baby." and go from there If that's not enough you can go onto the 'mommies make milk for babies' 'God designed mommies to care for their babies by giving them milk in their bodies' stuff like that

HTH

I've not had to actually explain anything to mine. So I may not have offered much *shrug*

Abby is too young to be able to ask me LOL But I'm sure she will be like "what the..." when she sees me doing it. She was fully bottlefed. She calls them "bubbles" LMBO
I'm hoping she won't embarrass me in front of anyone... she can't really say anything that would be embarrassing though so that's good

I think I recall vaguely a mother telling me oneday her other child said "mummy why is the baby eating you?"

I was talking about it again with the kids last night and it got way off track with DD then wanting to ask me if we can also drink pee.

MEg wasn't wrong when she said that my twins are Phil and Lil from Rugrats LOL

 I meant it in the nicest possible way

When I got home after having ds #2, our eldest walked out after having a nap, saw me breastfeeding, and ran at us, crying, saying "Stop biting my mummy" and grabbed baby by the head and pulled

I explained I was feeding, milk was in there for the baby, and that he wasn't biting me - you can imagine the look on his face, he was only just 2 yrs himself [rofl] He didn't actually believe me until he saw me expressing, then laughed himself silly. I was having trouble getting it going, so I removed the pump, and tried to express manually. Well, that got it going - it squirted across the room towards our eldest son, who thought it was the funniest thing he'd ever seen [rotfl]

He was completely fine with it once he knew the baby wasn't trying to hurt "his" mummy [OK]

Oh Meg, I know you did... I thought it was TOTALLY funny (the comment about Phil and Lil).

I didn't say anything, but when I got home from the hospital, ds saw me nursing and looked at me, "Mom, what are you doing???" I laughed and told him that I was giving ds milk from my "built in bottles" So that's what they were. He hated it when I expressed though. "Mom, I don't like to see you doing that." So I told him to go to another room LOL!!! I didn't worry about it and he was fine, if not a little stunned at first. He never had any interest in tasting it PTL, I don't think I could have handled that one, too weird for me!

My one son said to me," Mommy Samuel eats the nipples but I drink from the cup, right?"

My Godsons were quite intrigued when I was nursing my kids... they didn't believe there was milk in there, so I shot one of them with some! lol!!

What funny stories!

ho no, I don't think I could express in front of them... not that I think it's wrong because its not, just uncomfortable for me to do so.

[rofl] I wonder if Abby would do that  She gets upset when I'm in pain. And I can't even hold Pauls hand without her trying to seperate our hands and she says "my mummy" or "my daddy" LOL LOL

well DD and DS saw a woman b/f right next to them in the doctors surgery this morning and didn't bat an eyelid. They weren't even remotely interested in what she was doing LOL

That's good! It sounds like your talk worked!

I just did the basic 'babies drink milk from mommies'
'kids drink milk from cups'
Almost all my friends bf, so it wasn't a big deal.

The funniest thing for us was one day Bobert was crying, and very young, maybe 3 mo. Aiden says, "Mommy, get your boobs over here! Bobert wants nanas"
