View Full Version : LOL Do you ever feel RIPPED OFF
I understand the logic about saying pregnancy is 9 months when it is actually 10 - (because the months aren't credited to the pregnancy until they are actually completed and also due to the way Drs tend to work it out from the last date of LMP not conception date).
I feel the medical profession should come clean and say "Sorry ladies, we have been lying to you it's actually 10 months" LOL
They should throw away that stupid cardboard wheel thing which they use to match the EDD to the LMP and come clean... the wheel LIES! It says 9 months.
Why also, is there so much debate over what is considered "Full term"
My understanding anything under 36 pre-term... anything under that is premature
stephwhiz 08-20-2006, 09:12 PM I think it's a male conspiracy thing to say pregnancy is 9 months instead of 10 [rofl] . Now if men had to carry the baby for 10 months, they would make us think it was 10 years [rofllolblurb] . Oh goodness, I can only imagine...I'm glad it's women that are pregnant and not men! [rotfl]
Oh about the premature thing, I've always heard that any baby before 38 weeks was considered premature-- that two week early or two weeks late is considered full term [whatconfused] --not sure though, I think every dr, may be different on that one.
Stephanie :D
Yes, you are right, another conspiricy here... called "We won't tell them what a premature baby is as opposed to a pre-term" LOL LOL.
I had my twins at 35-36 weeks and the staff were all adamant that they were PRE-TERM not premmie. They needed no assistance in a humidicrib or anything, they were in my room from day one with the exception of one time where Paris had a few problems and had to go to the special care nursery.
My cousin in-law had her DD at 35 weeks and she was also not termed premmie and stayed in Katie's room with her from day one.
I think it also largely depends on the baby (speaking about what baby needs assistance and what doesn't, not on what date is pre-term, what is premmie).
RRRRRRRRRR these doctors, you know what they remind me of sometimes? The Mad Hatters from ALice in Wonderland LOL LOL.
Crystal, I have heard that about the abnormality testing too and that a high rate of babies are aborted that were normal.
I think it's really pathetic performing nucal fold scanning (which is how they diagnose downs syndrome) since ultasounds are still blurry and also the 3D ones cast off A LOT of shadow.
I wonder if they admit that to the mother?
Seeing this, I can understand why some Christians object to ultrasound but on the other hand, what the world intends for evil God can use for good (such as discovering my low lying placenta... now my baby will have the safest and best delivery for her) and sometimes it's not even about "deciding to terminate" the doctor just needs to check the babies growth, the placenta, for complications etc -
I was like ????? what when you said the midwife won't change your EDD based on the U/S because my twin dates were based on the ultrasound dates - this time the U/S and the EDD are slightly different but My obstetrician isn't to fussed about that and neither am i.
Yeah, I found the U/S a bit scarey enough even without your sad experience Crystal.
Actually, I did hold my breath during my dating scan (the first one) because I was finding out whether I was carrying multiples or not. If I had twins again I was prepared for that but didn't necessarily want that to happen
I worked out my own dates and my obstetrician confirmed them.
Crystal some fresh out of school practitioners can tend to be ... like that LOL

Well, it is 40 weeks, but because the months are all a little more than 4 weeks by a few days, it really does work out to 9 months! I found out I was pregnant around Christmas for boy number 2. Even if I count December...(he was born August 4) and even counting August...that's 9 months being pregnant. Anything under 37 weeks is considered premature. They know when you weren't pregnant...your cycle. They don't know exactly when you ovulated and got pregnant. Sometime in those two weeks after the start of your cycle. So they say you are a month pregnant when you are actually only 2 week pregnant! But since they don't know when they throw in those first two weeks! So term is acutally 38 weeks if we knew exactly when. (We don't. so we say 40 weeks.) But since we don't...then anything less than 37 weeks is preterm! Did I make sense?

I'm sure the whole point is to frustrate the hormonal pregnant mom, so that she is steaming mad by the time labor comes around :D
While we are on the subject, I was more frustrated that they even gave me a "due date". As my due dates came and went, I became more and more irritable. I just wondered if I wouldn't have had a date in my mind if I would have saved myself a lot of frustration. I think I'd be more in favor of a range.
Another thing, once you have more than one child, doesn't it only seem fair that we should be able to shorten the pregnancy somehow. By the time I had my fourth, I had no reason to experience 9 months (or 10) months of pregnancy. I would have been prefectly content to skip through 6 months of that!

 I totally agree with you Donna. I have two kids and wouldn't mind having another baby but i don't think i want to be pregnant for 9(10) months again.
[rofl] I just mentioned this in my PM to you! So funny!
I had an argument with my dad and sister about this last time ... as far as I'm concerned it's 10 months... especially when you go overdue by 2 weeks. :x
Anyway, I also hate the due date thing. I am actually only about 38 weeks 2 days pregnant... not 39 weeks 2 days. Because they work it from the first day of your last menstrual period. Well, you aren't pregnant then are you?! LOL And I know exactly when we started trying and it wasn't until about day 14 of my cycle.
Leslie, I had NEVER once in my internet explorations heard that explaination, so thanks that was great. Everything I read said that they only credit the months to you when they are completed.
I am still not too sure why they do SAY 9 months at 36 weeks, and then say the pregnancy is complete at 40 weeks - but I think it's due to the crediting after the month is up (is that right???). Probably as it would be just too hard to work out the pregnancy and term correctly????
Perhaps the terminology is different here amoung paediatricians etc because I was definately firmly told so and so many weeks is called pre-term and under this is premmie LOL. Even in Australian pregnancy and birth books it says the same. They definately all say Pre-term and Premmie are two different things (ah-huh ANOTHER conspiricy to confuse Aussie Mum's).
Renee, I had an inkling roughly when I ovulate because of the "signs" being quite obvious (ovary pain and heaps of mucus).
DH and I never go on a plan to get pregnant as in a "mating schedule" as such ROTF ROTF MATING SCHEDULE :D :D. I just go off the pill and relax. (I understand this is not something everyone can do though)
It took 4 months this time around where as with the twins I got pregnant in the first month.

Same here. And it wasn't on the first day of my last period LOL So I'm really not 39 weeks 4 days... more like 38 weeks something days...
