Hey all!
My youngest DS (14 months) had his first antibiotic two weeks ago for brochitus (sp?) from a severe head/chest cold...about two days after finishing the meds he came down with a severe diaper rash that I know is a yeast infection....any good cures to make it go away?
I am currently using an over the counter anti-fungal interchanged with a script that has Nystantin/aquaphore/hydrocortisone mix and changing him often and then using pure corn starch to keep the diaper area dryer near the skin...We give him a bath at night and let him dry for about 30 minutes before putting a diaper back on him this week too...
He can't have yogurt to eat because he can't have dairy, only soy....does soy yogurt have the same pro-biotic type help for yeast infections that dairy yogurt does? Are there other 14 month old food that would be helpful in curing the yeast up? Any OTC meds/creams or natural remedies you found helped it heal quicker? Thanks for any help! Ugh! His poor little tush is so red/rashy!

The nystatin worked well for my son when he was little and went through the same thing. I remeber being told to not use a cream and powder at teh same time, well nto at the exact same time, but ykwim, alternately or within the same day. To choose one or the other and stick with it for a few. I went with the cream. I don't know if you use cloth or disposables, but my ds' doctor had said that disposables virtually eliminated the need for a powder, as they really wick the moisture away (especially with frequent changing). HTH!

I don't know about the soy yogurt. But, I know that my ped recommended athlete's foot cream when my ds had antibiotic diaper rash...

Yes, give that boy some soy yogurt, lol! :D WholeSoy yogurt and Silk Live! are 100% vegan. I think that Silk Live has more helpful cultures though. Don't give him Stonyfield Farm O'soy unless he can tolerate trace amounts of dairy because it has some dairy cultures in it.
Hope that he gets better soon!
ds has had this several times...its awful! the nystatin cream worked really well. i also switched to disposables for a few days so i could use the ointment. also, after baths, i let him air dry so the towel wouldn't irrate him and when i changed a poopy i often rinsed him in the tub instead of using wipes. good luck!

thanks for all the tips guys! yeah, we use disposables anyway...um, I am not as good as all of you who can 1. sew your own 2. not gag if I tried to wash them out! LOL 3. that patient! Oy!
BlessedMommy, thanks for the tips about the yogurt, I wish they'd stop putting "trace" amounts of irritants in foods you aren't looking for them in, how frustrating! Geeze! I will try to find the Silk yogurt...I have only seen the Stony Field Farms when I looked last week....hmmmm!

Do you have a health food store nearby? You might be able to find it there. If you have a Whole Foods market or an equivalent store, for sure you would find it and a whole bunch of other kinds there too.
Yes, I totally agree, it's so irritating when dairy substitutes have dairy in them. Since I decided to go all the way vegan, I quit using Stonyfield Farm soy yogurt, so I'm going to have to take a container of the Silk yogurt and ask the grocery store to order it for me. Hopefully they will.

You could paint the area with Gentan Violet (sp) it is an antifungle that is really dark purple. It works great and doesn't cause stomach cramping like the other stuff. It will stain anything it gets on though. It is over the counter and costs less than $2 usually. I usually have to apply it twice about 3 days apart to completely clear things up.
