Just wanted to throw this out here for anybody trying to replace peanut butter in your household. I decided to stop using peanut butter around here because Hannah's not supposed to have it yet, so having it around guarantees that she'll get into it.

We love almond butter, but wanted something cheaper for more regular use. So I discovered Sunflower Seed butter (Namebrand = sunbutter). It's so delicious! It tastes similar to peanut butter, but has a very nice sunflower seedy taste. It's also very nutritious!

I don't think I've ever seen that before - I will keep an eye out for it.

My neighbors eat sunbutter due to allergies and they love it...but oddly enough, for us, it is sunflower seeds that send us to the emerg. with serious allergic reactions. Go figure.

is hannah alergic to peanuts? Just curious as to why she can't have it yet.

I'll have to look for it. I LOVE LOVE LOVE me some sunflower seeds. Where do you find it? I mean, which store?

It's recommended to wait until 2 or 3 years old to introduce peanuts, due to the high allergy potential. And since we have allergies in our family, I'm especially concerned about that.

I got mine in a health food store, but I believe that our local Meijer store also carries it. (Although I don't think theirs is as "pure" as the health food store's) Just look next to the peanut butter and jam. If your store has it, it would probably be there. (Either that or maybe in a health food section, I dunno)

There are different varieties available like creamy, crunchy, etc.

I was at someone's home a while ago and saw that they used it. I thinkfor the same reason, peannut allergies. Anyway, I then saw it at the grocery store, but it is a bit more expensive than peannut butter. It was about 3-4 dollars. Is it crunchy?
I love almond butter, but I know again your talking nuts!

You can get creamy or crunchy. It is more expensive than peanut butter (mine was between $5-6) but that's still cheaper than almond butter. The cheapest I can get raw almond butter for is $7.00 a jar.

Okay Ruth, you had me sold on this almond butter idea. I bought a jar of Maranatha all-natural almond butter. So, always one to try new things.... i took a big bite of it on some yummy bread and...

It. Was. Gross.

Sorry. Was it the brand? Can you suggest another brand that might taste better? It tasted like cardboard. Ick. Which I find really odd because i LOVE ALMONDS.... and I love nutella... LOL maybe I should just stick with our kraft peanut butter. It's cheap and yummy. :-)

Okay, I think I discovered the problem. It didn't have any salt in it (it said no salt on the jar.) So, I went and put salt on it and it tasted better. Still not as good as the kraft peanut butter we have, but decent, and more almondy as opposed to cardboard.

I'm still a skeptic but maybe we will try it a few times. :)

Oh, yes, Cheese don't give up just yet LOL! I used to think that almond butter was sort of okay, but certainly nothing that I would use in place of peanut butter. Now I bring a jar of almond butter in the house and we eat it straight out of the jar, LOL. We're lucky if the jar lasts for the week.

It's a matter of aclimating your taste buds to the different taste and texture. Now the current peanut butter that you buy, is it the just peanuts and salt natural variety with the oil on top, or is it the sweetened and mixed variety? The reason why I asked is that if it's the latter, then jumping to almond butter is a big jump, because of the texture and flavor of the almond butter.

However, one favorite of ours with the almond butter is to mix it with honey. YUM! We spread it on celery or spread or whatever and throw some raisins with that. It's so good! Also, almond butter is so good for you and has stuff in it that peanut butter doesn't have as much of, like calcium. Did Katherine try it? Hannah likes almond butter okay. We've also given her cashew butter and sunflower seed butter.

You may want to try the creamy sunflower seed butter also, because that's not quite as big of a jump from peanut butter.

GL!
