My little guy is 4 weeks old. From what I read he can't get "constipated" since he is on breast milk but he is having trouble having a BM none the less. I know they can go days without going and it's normal but he IS trying to go but can't. He strains and strains and cries and he just can't get anything out. I gave him some Karo syrup on Wednesday and it helped, he went, but now he's having trouble again. :( I tried the Karo syrup again today and it didn't help. He seems worse than ever. I don't know if it's something I'm eating or what, I'm working on that. We tried giving him a warm bath and massaging his tummy. It calmed him down and he passed some gas but he still hasn't gone yet. Any other suggestions?
Thanks for any advice you have ladies. I'm desperate, it's breaking my heart to see him like this, I feel so helpless. I wouldn't be so worried if he wasn't TRYING to go but since he is trying and nothing is happening it has me concerned. :???:

I wish i could be of more help, I was thinking maybe a warm bath or something warm on his tummy? Have you talked to his Ped.? If your concerend maybe you could give them a call and see what they would suggest. I will pray that you are able tohave some peace about this and for your little guy!

when he does poop what does it look like? is it normal or is it hard constipated looking??? My little one, when he was right around a month started straining and looked like he was in SO much pain, but his poop remained normal (he also was a once a week pooper...still is an every other day pooper with solids) The dr told me that was normal, that he is just getting used to those pooper muscles:-D and that his little system was still immature and was just getting used to working, and not to worry. If his poop isn't normal consistency and really does look like little balls I would call your Ped.

I had the same experience with Nathan. The pediatrician told me that sometimes infants have trouble with their "pooper muscles", as previously stated. They have to relax one and strain the other, just a learning process for them. The best advice I can give is just try to relax him during these times, like you did. It didn't last for too long with us... two weeks maybe, and then look out, poop all the time! :)
Oh yeah, and as previously stated, if his poops are hard, definitely give the pediatrician a call.

Just a pure guess here: if you eat fiber, dried fruit, plums/prunes, fresh veggies will that get to him via breast milk? I've personally been having trouble in this area, but after 4 little dried plums, I'm back to normal again!!
